CW: Now that Pittsburgh Paints Co. has separated from PPG, what are the company’s plans to differentiate itself?
Carson: The Pittsburgh Paints Company became a privately held company in December 2024. This year, we are working to separate from PPG and stand as an independent leader in the U.S. and Canda. As you can imagine, there is an extraordinary amount of work to be done there, and the Pittsburgh Paints Co. team has done an amazing job in making the transition seamless so far. We’re sprinting to innovate the value proposition for our customers and to help them succeed with Pittsburgh Paints Co. For the most part, we are in the business of making and selling paint to people in the business of buying paint. Our dealers, retailers, contractors, and the like, buy paint for a living. We are innovating to become their best choice and we’re investing in our customers to help both their businesses and ours grow.
CW: What is the message of the new branding?
Carson: The logo is a modern redesign of the beloved “Drippy P,” befitting of a new path forward. The original logo, created in the 1950s, was proudly used through the 2010s and represents our bright future, with a clear nod to our 150-year history of expertise in the paint and coatings industry. Our new tagline, “priming you for success,” is a clear testament to our customers. Regardless of their size or project, we are committed to helping them achieve their goals. It’s not just about our products — it’s about our people, our services and our expertise that helps them fulfill their vision.
CW: What products, technologies, initiatives are Pittsburgh Paints planning to launch?
Carson: Beginning this year, and continuing over the next several years, all paint products currently in the PPG PAINTS™ product family will transition to the Pittsburgh Paints Co. brand, including the same great products like SPEEDHIDE™, MANOR HALL™, SEAL GRIP ™, PERMANIZER™, and PERMA-CRETE™. All exterior signage at U.S. Pittsburgh Paints Co. retail locations will be rebranded with the new identity over time.
Aside from rebranding updates, over the next year, we will be bringing exciting innovations to market that will help our customers grow their businesses and their profitability with Pittsburgh Paints Co. Additionally, our PITTSBURGH PAINTS & STAINS™ brand will soon be launching a new product at Menards for DIY painters of all levels, and we are gearing up for several GLIDDEN® paint launches at Walmart.
CW: What’s are the plans for this new chapter for Pittsburgh Paints Co.
Carson: I like to say that our legacy is 150 years young because while we have a rich history of expertise, now that we’re a newly independent company, we’re fresh to invest in our products, marketing and innovations. We have an eye towards today’s and tomorrow’s needs.
CW: What has been the initial reaction by customers to the new company?
Carson: I have had the privilege of meeting many of our customers in my first month with the business. They have shared their initial reactions on how we’re an important and necessary asset to most folk’s businesses, and they’re excited to see what’s ahead in our partnerships. Our teams are working relentlessly to help our customers succeed.
In creating our new branding, we gathered customer input, and they helped to inform the new logo and tagline.
