Coatings Suppliers Highlight New Technologies at ACS 2024
By David Savastano, Contributing Editor | 04.30.24
New products range from key raw materials to new developments in equipment.
One of the most important highlights of any American Coatings Show is the new products, and leading exhibitors have brought a large range of products this year. For example, Jorge D. Saldaña, head of sales and market development at WYN Polymers, noted that WYN Polymers will be highlighting self-crosslinking acrylics free of PFAS and high performing styrene-acrylics. Kaltun Mining will be highlighting feldspar and quartz additives.
“We are continuing to focus our new product efforts on Q resin-based technologies for water and oil repellency,” Siltech Corporation VP Robert Ruckle said.
“We are demonstrating two of our lab-sized units, showcasing their practicality, ergonomic design, small footprint and scalability to their production counterparts,” said Sara Fulford, VP sales and marketing for Hockmeyer Equipment.
“At this year's ACS, Shamrock will feature a lineup of innovative products designed to meet the evolving needs of our customers,” Rue Richey, marketing leader at Shamrock Technologies, said. “Among our highlighted offerings are the BioSLIP, MaxWAX, and Texture series. The BioSLIP product line represents cutting-edge advancements in bio-based products, and we’re offering MaxWAX as an effective alternative to traditional materials. Additionally, our Texture series addresses the growing demand for surface effects, catering to the visual and hand feel requirements of modern coatings.”
John Kwasneski, director of sales, Coatings, Construction & Adhesives Americas Region for Munzing, said that the MÜNZING team will be available to discuss its continued efforts to expand its renewable additives portfolio.
“Among those initiatives include viable alternatives to PTFE,” Kwasneski added.
Micro Powders VP Rich Czarnecki said that Micro Powders will be highlighting its newest products with an emphasis on natural ingredients and PFAS-free technology.
“We’re excited about our 100% natural, biobased texturing additive for powder coatings that can provide different texturing effects depending on coating chemistry, including a sandpaper-like texture similar to conventional PTFE additives,” said Czarnecki. “For architectural coatings, there is a multi-functional, microplastic-free mattifier. This powder improves burnish resistance and enhances cleanability and soil release for matte, satin, and eggshell finishes, plus it's surface treated for effortless incorporation into paint formulations.
“We’ll also have our proven highly effective PTFE replacement options including a surface treated powder for ease of use, and MP-28AL, a value engineered composite that provides lubricity with rub, scratch, and abrasion resistance,” Czarnecki added.
Patrik Maeder, senior sales director, grinding and dispersing for Buhler Inc., said that the focus lies with the Buhler high energy Invicta and the full volume Cenomic Optima bead mill technologies as well as customer services with the TotalCare offerings.
“We have many new products that we’re excited to talk about, such as Solsperse 29000, a flowable 100% active dispersing agent for low to medium polarity liquid organic media; PowderAdd 9780, a PTFE-free texturing agent for powder coatings; and Turboset 5000HS, a new high-solids polyurethane dispersion,” said Nicholas Sterne, North America marketing manager, Lubrizol Performance Coatings.
“We are highlighting organic pigments, gum rosins and hydrocarbon resins, as well as extenders and additives for the coatings market,” David Carroll, vice president, R.E. Carroll, Inc., said.
“The ACS will be our formal introduction of all our products; BioBlack TX and BioBlack DP aqueous dispersions and BioBlack 13 and BioBlack 7 dry pigment powders,” said Juan Marcano, director of sales for Nature Coatings.
“We are highlighting our 45-liter horizontal media mill w/ceramic chamber, our 4” shred, and 1.5-liter batch mill,” said Christoph Snyder, general manager, Custom Milling and Consulting LLC.
Melanie Waddell, director of customer marketing, Honeywell Advanced Materials, said that Honeywell has many offerings that are ideal for the ACS audience, with NduroMatt a particular highlight.
“This year we are highlighting NduroMatt, which is a unique, multifunctional additive that significantly improves surface properties of coatings and provides formulation flexibility over conventional matting agents,” Waddell noted. “In addition, NduroMatt is highly resistant to burnishing, marring, and scratching. Stop by the Honeywell booth (2454) and try to scuff our wall painted with the NduroMatt additive. Anyone who tries to scuff our wall will get entered into a drawing to win a prize.”
“At this year's American Coatings Show, we'll showcase our broad portfolio of high-performance acrylic polymers for architectural, construction and industrial coatings,” said Makarand (Mak) Gawade, EPS’ global marketing director. “We are launching EPS 2210, a new acrylic emulsion for elastomeric wall and roof coatings, capable of conforming to ASTM D6083 Type II standards while providing excellent asphalt bleed-through and dirt pickup resistance.
“Alongside EPS 2210, we will also highlight EPS 2786, an all-acrylic polymer that empowers formulators to create near-zero VOC formulations without fluorosurfactants,” added Gawade. “The versatility of EPS 2786 makes it a perfect fit for semi-gloss to high gloss paints, making it an ideal choice for projects such as institutional or commercial environments or areas that see a high amount of traffic.
“For customers in the industrial segment, we'll be featuring EPS 2585, a high-solids acrylic emulsion designed for <100g/L VOC direct-to-metal (DTM) applications,” Gawade noted. “What sets EPS 2585 apart is its enhanced hardness, flexibility, and corrosion resistance. This polymer is especially useful for exterior applications due to its excellent gloss retention and its ability to adhere to a variety of substrates.”
Nigel Atkinson, vice president – paints & coatings at Arxada, said that Arxada will be leveraging its decades of experience in paints and coatings formulation and application, vast knowledge resources in microbiology, and expertise in regulatory affairs to deliver unique offerings to the market.
“Our product offering to the paints and coatings industry will be a main focus, as our portfolio of preservatives and additives is one of the broadest available,” Atkinson observed. “We will showcase our advanced wet-state preservatives based on a wide array of active chemistries and formulated products to give customers unparalleled flexibility. Customers will recognize some of the leading brand names in wet-state protection, including Proxel and Mergal. We will also be showcasing our dry-film preservatives under the Polyphase, Troysan, and Omadine brands, to name only a few.
“Based on a diversity of active chemistries including IPBC, Arxada’s dry-film products promote industry leading coatings and asset protection backed by decades of expertise and proven history. We will also be featuring our advanced TIME controlled release dry-film preservatives at the show, a suite of latest generation encapsulated antifungal and antialgal products engineered to provide balanced protection over time, reduce leaching into the environment, and maximize safety, handling, and environmental advantages,” added Atkinson.
Atkinson said that an important differentiator in Arxada’s portfolio is its performance additives, something unique amongst preservatives suppliers.
“Our additives for liquid coatings include Troysol substrate wetting and flow & leveling additives, Troykyd defoamers, Troysperse dispersants, Troythix rheology modifiers, and Effexel open time additives, as well as Troymax driers and Troycat catalysts,” said Atkinson. “These products have a long history of success and offer excellent control of application and surface properties. Going beyond liquid coatings, Arxada offers its Powdermate additives for powder coatings, providing functionality in flow & leveling, degassing, and texturing.”
