There is a greater drive toward sustainability and the Circular Economy among all stakeholders, from brand owners to consumers. This is also true in the paint and coatings industry.

With that in mind, ACS 2022’s plenary session featured Chris Killian, Eastman Chemical’s SVP and CTO, who gave the keynote address, “The Role of Innovation in the Coatings Industry When Every Color Must Be Green.”

Killian noted a variety of disruptive trends worldwide, including sustainability.

“Global brands are making a significant commitment to reduce material waste and climate impact,” said Killian. “Coating technologies provide more durable solutions based on sustainable feedstocks. The circular economy is creating new growth opportunities for bio-derived materials and compostable/biodegradable solutions and providing material solutions without compromise in performance.”

One example Killian cited is molecular recycling, or taking feedstocks and reusing them. Killian reported that Eastman is diverting 250 million pounds of waste that would otherwise have gone to landfills.

Ultimately, the paint and coatings industry is well positioned to develop and produce sustainable solutions.

“Consumer research tells us that more than ever, coatings choices are being driven by sustainability,” Killian concluded. “Modern coatings are extending the life of industrial assets by 15 years or more. Coatings and additives are fundamental to reliable and safe operation of solar panels and wind turbine blades. Innovative coatings are enabling the reduction of single-use plastics in consumer goods. Working together, the coatings and materials industry can be pivotal in solving significant world challenges.”
