Brand Description

Jotun is one of the leading paint manufacturers in the world. With a wide range of products within interior decoration and exterior protection, the Jotun logo can be found in more than 100 countries.

The company was founded in Sandefjord, Norway in 1926. The fonder Odd Gleditsch Sr. had witnessed whaling boats rusting away in the Antarctic. He quickly discovered the penguins; these caring creatures that overcame the toughest weather conditions. The penguin soon became Jotun’s official symbol and ambassador of the company’s values: Loyalty, Care, Respect, and Boldness.

Almost a century later, our mission remains the same: “Jotun Protects Property”. Jotun has grown into a multi-national company widely renown for high-quality paints and coatings. The Jotun Group consists of 67 companies and 40 production facilities across the world, and the more than 10.200 employees are united by a strong company culture, The Penguin Spirit.

Jotun Group is divided into seven regions: Scandinavia, Western Europe, Eastern Europe and Central Asia, Middle East, India and Africa, North-East Asia, South East Asia and Pacific and the Americas – responsible for the sale of Decorative Paints and Performance Coatings (Marine, Protective and Powder Coatings).

The company has 40 production facilities in 23 countries, 66 companies in 46 countries and is represented in more than 100 countries around the world. The company has 10,043 employees. Decorative coatings comprised 37% of sales, protective 29% of sales, marine coatings 27% and powder coatings 7%.

Jotun recently launched CX-Rated Anticorrosive powder coating solution, offering industries access to proven technologies to protect critical equipment operating in the most challenging environments.

Every year, trillions of dollars is spent to fight steel corrosion. According to Harshad Gawande, Jotun’s global category manager for functional powder coatings, corrosion risk is higher for energy companies, especially those operating in aggressive environments.

“In addition to costs related to maintenance, protecting steel can reduce risk of equipment failure that can lead to downtime, or worse, an accident,“ he says. “To help manage these challenges, Jotun has developed the industry’s first anticorrosive powder coatings solution specifically engineered to protect steel used in the most extreme environments.”

The ISO 12944 standard specifies atmospheric corrosion categories from C1 (very low) to C5 (very high). In 2018, the standard was revised to include CX, a rating that applies to highly aggressive environments such as offshore assets exposed to high salinity, or industrial areas located in subtropical areas with extreme humidity. In 2023, Jotun introduced Jotun Primax Coating Solutions, a powder coatings system that is Qualisteel compliant and has been independently tested to meet ISO 12944 CX requirements.

“Primax Coating Solutions was engineered to protect steel used in critical machinery, such as generators, transformers, electrical cabinets, cranes, and other equipment operating in aggressive environments,” said Gawande.

“The solution is a two-layer anticorrosive steel protection system Involving primers and a premium topcoat, Jotun Super Durable. Jotun Super Durable has a proven track record of resisting extreme temperature fluctuations, high humidity, acid rain UV protection to retain color and gloss in the building construction industry,” adds Gawande. “Our assortment of primers, such as Primax Xtend and Primax Protect, have also been proven effective in other industries, but achieving a CX rating required a lot of work.”

Because surface preparation is critical to performance, Jotun primers have been independently tested using different surface cleaning methods and steel thickness.

“We are the only coatings supplier which can provide third-party documentation for surfaces that are blast cleaned, galvanized or chemically treated with zinc phosphates,” he says. “We are also the only company that works with approved applicators to offer a product guarantee, supported by our dedicated technical support teams.”

Jotun recently launched MegaGloss Metallic, a supreme high gloss metallic topcoat system for the megayacht segment. Jotun has been active in the superyacht niche for more than 25 years.

“In that time,” said Tracey Warner, Jotun’s yachting category manager, “the company has built an in depth understanding of the needs and challenges of the customers within this demanding market.”

“Metallic topcoats have always been the most difficult to apply,” said Roelof Barelds, yachting sales director, “so it was a vital feature that we could offer a system designed to give applicators the opportunity to achieve the best possible result. By offering excellent levelling properties combined with specialist technical support at every stage, you can rest assured that the final finish will exceed expectations.”

“Superyachts demand the very best solutions,” Warner noted. “If the owner would like their yacht to match their supercar, we can provide tailor made colors to help them stand out from the crowd. High DOI combined with excellent abrasion resistance helps to protect the yacht from scratches and ensure long lasting beauty.”

Jotun have launched this system to complete their MegaGloss family of products, which include MegaGloss AC and MegaGloss HG. Building on 90 years’ experience in the marine environment, Jotun provide technical support at every stage, before, during and after project completion, all supported via the JotunCare lifecycle service.

Jotun recently rolled out its HullKeeper Program globally. Jotun’s proactive hull optimization program enables ship operators to take full control of their vessels’ hulls and gives them the necessary tools to improve efficiency, lower costs and help with their decarbonization targets.

The HullKeeper program has been tested and employed by a number of ship operators and is now ready for a global rollout. The innovative program supports ship operators in keeping a clean hull – and will help reduce fuel consumption and GHG emissions, as well as helping to prevent transferring of invasive species.

The wider rollout comes at a time when an increasing number of regulations such as IMOs Energy Efficiency Ship Index (EEXI) and Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) is putting added pressure on ship operators to not only understand and comply with the forthcoming regulations and industry decarbonization targets, but also in maintaining their profitability.

“The four-part HullKeeper program combines Jotun’s trusted analytical and technical services – an expertise built over years of advanced data analysis and in-field experience, with advanced digital capability and ROV inspections. With HullKeeper, we offer customers unique hull performance support services based on solid and trusted data and advice regardless of the chosen coating. Customers can subscribe to the whole package or select individual modules depending on their needs,” said Dr. Andreas Krapp, Jotun’s global digital and data director.

The company has 38 production facilities in 23 countries, 67 companies in 47 countries and is represented by more than 100 countries around the world. The company has 9,855 employees. Decorative coatings comprised 40% of sales, protective 26% of sales, marine coatings 26% and powder coatings 8%.

According to its latest financial report, Jotun’s strong profitability in 2020 was supported in part by favorable raw material prices and currency effects. However, Jotun’s success in gaining market share in many countries and segments, even in regions severely impacted by the coronavirus pandemic, owes more to the strength of Jotun’s corporate structure, the flexibility of its strategy and decades of experience managing global challenges.

In response to increasing costs of critical raw materials, including epoxies, copper, zinc, polyester, emulsions, and titanium dioxide, Jotun finds it necessary to raise prices.

Morten Fon, Jotun’s president and CEO, said price increases will apply to all relevant decorative paints, marine, protective and powder coatings products.

“In anticipation of rising costs, the company worked closely with key suppliers over the past year to manage the situation,” he said. “However, the rapidly increasing cost of raw materials left the company with no choice but to adjust prices. While we will continue to work diligently to avoid placing any additional price pressure on our customers, the cost of our products and solutions reflect the market reality,” he says. “However, we remain confident that our service offering will help our customers offset higher costs with innovative, long-lasting products and solutions that help them gain a competitive business advantage.”

The company has 40 production facilities in 24 countries, 64 companies in 45 countries and is represented by more than 100 countries around the world. The company has 10,007 employees. Decorative coatings comprised 37 percent of sales, protective 31 percent of sales, marine coatings 23 percent, and powder coatings 9 percent.

“2019 was a good year for Jotun with growth in all regions and segments, and we deliver the best results ever. Over the past few years, Jotun has been affected by low market activity in the offshore and shipbuilding markets. These conditions have turned in our favor, and have a positive impact on Jotun’s results,” said Morten Fon, president and CEO. “Operating profit is up 71 percent compared to last year, mainly due to increased sales and improved margins. Good cost control and a weaker Norwegian  krone also contributed to the good result in 2019.”

Jotun Restructures U.S. Business

Jotun decided to restructure its business in the U.S. to ensure that customers are served fast and accurately, by improved logistics and products specially developed for the U.S. market.

The Belle Chasse, La., production site will be closed. Jotun Paints Inc. will be headquartered in Houston.

Products will be supplied from Jotun factories overseas, while product development remains in the U.S.

“Our new agile organization will also offer improved delivery service,” said Bjoern Wallentin, president of Jotun Paints Inc.

Jotun Paints Inc. has over time struggled with cost, and the restructuring of the company will support Jotun’s future growth ambitions in the U.S.

“Jotun’s team of dedicated chemists continue to develop new products specially tailored to serve market needs in the U.S. This, together with improved network distribution and ability to deliver on time in full, our ambition is to create new growth and increase both sales and market shares,”  Wallentin said.

Approximately 65 employees will remain employed by Jotun Paints Inc.

New Product Launches
Jotun unveiled the next generation of its SeaForce biocidal antifouling range, with three new products featuring Hydractive technology. The new solution provides predictable, long-term performance for diverse vessel needs. Jotun originally launched its SeaForce range in 2004. Since that point, there has been some 27,000 vessel applications worldwide.

The range features three core products: SeaForce Shield, offering effective protection; SeaForce Active, actively working to safeguard hulls even when vessels are not in use; and SeaForce Active Plus, delivering premium protection at an affordable price.

SeaForce Active and SeaForce Active Plus also feature a triple biocide package, one of which is the same biocide combination used in the top of the range SeaQuantum product portfolio.

Jotun recently launched Ultra One, Ultra Lite and Primax Excel, which allow engineered wood to be protectively coated in powder – and for the first time, these products can be applied to natural wood too.

This process has not been possible before on natural wood due to the fact that the temperatures required to use powder coatings would damage the material.

This breakthrough gives designers a new way of considering wood as a viable building material and brings a durable, more environmentally friendly product to the forefront of forward-looking design. Copenhagen-based designer Troels Flensted has used Ultra One on one of his latest designs.

Flensted wanted to elevate his chosen material of MDF and have the design monochromatic, textured and with differing dimensions of reflection and shading – all of which the powder coating helped make possible.

Jotun Signs Agreement with World’s Largest Shipbuilder

Jotun said it signed a memorandum of understanding with the world’s largest shipyards for a new type of marine paint that reduces solvent emissions by up to 90 percent. A memorandum of understanding has been signed with Korean Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI). This is the starting point of closer cooperation and the use of a new, innovative solvent-free primer.

The signing took place between Jotun’s chairman Odd Gleditch, Jr. and HHI’s Chief Executive Ka Sam-Hyun during the South Korean President’s state visit to Norway in June.

South Korea’s Minister of Industry Yunmo Song attended the signing ceremony.

“The partnership with Jotun will allow HHI, the world’s largest shipbuilder, to be better equipped to meet the new environmental requirements that are aimed at reducing solvent emissions, “ said Sam-Hyun.

“We are, of course, very pleased with the agreement with the world’s largest shipyard, but even more satisfied that our innovation is contributing to a better environment,” added Morten Fon, CEO Jotun.

The product will reduce solvent VOC emissions into the air from approximately 250 grams per liter to just nine grams per liter. Shipyards will save hundreds of millions of dollars by avoiding investments in plants related to the combustion of VOCs. VOC combustion also leads to CO2 emissions, so this innovation provides a double benefit.

“We have conducted research in Korea and in Norway while developing this paint, and after 13 years can conclude that we have succeeded in developing a product that reduces solvent emissions by over 90 percent,” said Erik Risberg, one of the scientists behind the new paint.

Primers make up 60-70 percent of the total amount of paint applied to a ship. The new product is currently available for Korean shipyards and selected shipbuilders in Europe.

In 2017, Jotun invested in new laboratories (in Turkey, the Czech Republic and the U.K.), the ongoing construction of factories and celebrated the completion of new factories in Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines and Russia. In Norway, construction is underway for the company’s new head office and R&D center. The company also continues to allocate resources towards IT tools and systems to modernize the company and to build the competence of its employees.

Significant and continuous raw material cost increases throughout 2017 and early 2018 has led to a price increase in all Jotun Powder Coatings products. The increase will be up to 20 percent, depending on the specific compositions of the products. Jotun cited, the significant increases last year in titanium, polyester and epoxies, and the sharp increase in epoxies again and pigments during this first quarter of 2018 as reasons for the increase.

Jotun Australia recently launched yachting products to the Australian Yacht and Superyacht industry. Jotun has been a market leading antifouling supplier to the Australian yacht and commercial markets.

Jotun has opened a new R&D center at its site in Flixborough, UK. The facility will focus on passive fire protection and insulation coatings innovation. The company is now seeking to expand its specialist team of fire protection chemists and products in response to increasing demand within the infrastructure, oil, gas, petrochemical and energy sectors.

“We’re experiencing sustained growth in our advanced fire protection coatings segment and we want to build on that momentum,” explained James Irving, Jotun R&D manager. “We already have a cutting-edge fire and insulation research facility in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and this new center will work in tandem with that established team, increasing capacity and accelerating new developments. The UK is a center of excellence for passive fire protection technology, with a strong network of third party test facilities, classification societies and safety specialists. It’s therefore an obvious choice for this major investment, which we believe will help attract exactly the kind of dedicated, high-level talent we’re looking for to develop further ground-breaking passive fire protection solutions.”

Jotun has owned and operated the Flixborough site since 1989. The new investment will see the creation of a 1,600 m² two-floor facility, featuring two furnace areas (to test intumescent paints), laboratories, mill rooms, offices and plant space. In addition, an impressive atrium and viewing gallery will overlook the application spaces and conditioning rooms, while a VIP area will provide clients with a unique perspective of the furnaces, giving them a first-hand view of the fire testing process.

Sales: 2 Billion

Markets Served: Decorative paints, Marine and protective coatings, Industrial coatings, Powder coatings

Jotun recorded sales of $1.965 billion for 2013. Jotun Group is divided into seven regions responsible for the sale of Decorative Paints and Performance Coatings (Marine, Protective and Powder Coatings). The company has 36 production facilities in 21 countries, 70 companies in 44 countries and is represented in more than 90 countries around the world.  Marine coatings comprised 27 percent of sales, Decorative paints 37 percent, Protective coatings 26 percent and Powder coatings 10 percent.

In 2013, Jotun experienced continued  strong growth in the Protective segment,  especially in the Offshore, Hydrocarbon Processing Industry and Infrastructure concepts. The company recorded particularly good growth in China, Turkey, Russia and Indonesia. While other markets such as in India and the Americas region did not perform as well, Jotun achieved an overall record bottom-line growth in the Protective segment.

Jotun experienced a contraction in its marine coatings business in 2013. While the segment remains profitable, persistent tonnage over-capacity issues in primary shipping segments have resulted in a sharp decline in newbuilding deliveries. These market forces had a negative impact on sales, especially in China and Korea. However, a modest growth in global trade over the past two years has increased the demand for sea-borne transportation, and the newbuilding market seems to be on a path to recovery.

Jotun performed moderately well in the Powder Coatings segment in 2013, led by strong growth in Turkey, Malaysia, Indonesia and UAE. Growth in China, which represents the world’s leading market for powder coatings, was slowed by intense competitive pressure from low-cost producers and the need to customize products to manage the lack of uniform standards found in China’s powder coatings market.
