Headquartered in Helsinki, Finland, Teknos Group Oy is the leading producer of industrial coatings in Scandinavia, as well as having a strong position in retail and architectural coatings.
A family-owned business, Teknos has sites throughout Scandinavia, Germany, the UK, Poland, and Slovenia, as well as agents and representatives in approximately 20 other European countries. The company has approximately 1,800 employees and 16 facilities globally; its most recent addition was its new Commercial and Competence Centre in Dong Nai Province, Vietnam.
In March 2024, Teknos again received the EcoVadis gold medal for its sustainability performance, placing Teknos within the top 5% of more than 130,000 companies rated by EcoVadis across the globe.
“It is clear that the coatings industry is in transformative phase, where safety and sustainability are being prioritized,” said Paula Salastie, CEO and owner of Teknos Group, in announcing the award. “At Teknos, we are working closely with our suppliers and customers to collectively innovate and develop the next generation of high-performance paints that have less impact on the environment, prolong the lifecycle of our customers’ products, and are safer to handle and apply.
“For us, being sustainable goes well beyond products and operations,” Salastie added. “Being a family-owned company, people are everything to us, with safety being our number one priority. We strive to create a great place to work where people can become the best versions of themselves. We believe in forging long-term relationships with all our stakeholders, from customers to the communities we operate in, to support them in achieving their sustainability ambitions.”
Teknos Group Oy is the leading supplier of industrial coatings in Scandinavia with a strong position in retail and architectural coatings too. Teknos is one of Finland’s largest family-owned businesses. Group companies operate in Scandinavia, Germany, the UK, Poland, Slovenia and Russia, and through a well-established network of agents and representatives in approximately 20 other European countries. The company has approximately 1,800 employees and 16 facilities.
Teknos Deutschland GmbH has recently completed a strategic review of its production footprint in Germany. The objective of this review was to develop plans to simplify the operational footprint while identifying opportunities to further develop the production and delivery capabilities of Teknos Deutschland GmbH.
As a result of this review, Teknos has decided not to proceed with a new factory in Steinau an der Straße and plans to cease operations in Fulda. After evaluating the existing locations, Teknos determined that the Brüggen site offers more expansion and development options. Therefore, Teknos plans to relocate production from Fulda to the existing Brüggen site and develop its operations in Brüggen.
Teknos informed its employees in Germany about the planned relocation of production from Fulda to Brüggen. Approximately 20 jobs in the production, logistics and R&D are affected by these plans. Jobs of employees outside production, logistics and R&D would not be affected. Teknos has now engaged in negotiations with the works council in Fulda.
Teknos has published its non-financial report for 2021. By publishing non-financial information, Teknos strives to provide transparency into the progress of its sustainability actions.
In 2021 Teknos worked to better understand its emissions impact. The work begun by calculating the carbon footprint of Teknos’ own operations, including company facilities and vehicles (Scope 1) as well as purchased electricity, heating, and cooling (Scope 2). Teknos continued working with innovation projects related to renewable raw materials and packaging solutions with lower environmental footprint. For example, Teknos joined SUSBINCO research consortium that aims to develop bio-based binders and coatings as well as launched a new product with the packaging containing 90% recycled plastic.
In 2021, Teknos was awarded with the EcoVadis Gold Recognition Level, placing Teknos in the top 5 percent of EcoVadis assessed companies. This recognition is an appreciation of Teknos’ sustainability efforts made so far. Teknos also linked some of its sustainability targets to its bank loan margin, which is another quantifiable step in the company’s sustainability work.
Coatings manufacturer Teknos is conducting wide-ranging research to find industrial side streams that can be utilized as raw materials in coatings manufacturing.
“At present we are researching the use of secondary raw materials in many product groups. Bio-based raw materials are already used in various products. ” said Laura Kosonen, Teknos’ product manager.
The secondary raw materials that Teknos is researching include both products at the end of their life cycle and industrial side streams from which raw material for coatings can be separated. The principle of a circular economy is simple: one man’s waste is another man’s raw material. Consequently, Teknos’ partners are key players as raw material producers.
Teknos is shaping a sustainable future by contributing to the making of a fully bio-based and recyclable bottle. Teknos has a key role in developing a revolutionary paper bottle together with major international brands and experts in material, design and technology such as Coca-Cola, Carlsberg, L’Oréal and Absolut.
