AKZO NOBEL’S VAN DER MEER
TO RETIRE FROM POST ON MAY 1
Following a career spanning 32 years
with Akzo Nobel and having served on
the board of management for a dozen
years, Rudy van der Meer will retire on
May 1. His coatings responsibilities
will be assumed by Hans Wijers, who
also serves as CEO.
van der Meer joined the board in
1993 with responsibility for chemicals.
After integrating the two Akzo chemical
divisions and subsequently the
acquired chemical activities of Nobel
Industries, he extended the unit’s leading
positions in selected segments of
specification, functional and specialty
chemicals. In 2000 he assumed responsibility
for coatings and successfully
enhanced Akzo Nobel’s global coatings
leadership position by increasing profitability
and expanding market positions,
especially in Asia and Eastern
Europe.
In other personnel changes,
Maarten van Veen will retire from the
supervisory board. van Veen, who is
currently deputy chairman, served
seven years on the supervisory board.
Maarten van der Bergh, non-executive
chairman of the board of Lloyds TSB
and former president of Royal Dutch
Petroleum Company, will be proposed
for appointment to the supervisory
board, effective May 1 for a four year
term. Abraham Cohen will step down
in accordance with the rotation schedule
and will be proposed for reappointment
for a further four year term
