Buhler is introducing a new technology for manufacturing varnish for printing inks—the continuous production in a twin-screw reactor—at the European Coatings Show 2009. The overall system consists of three main components: the dosing units, which supply the processing unit with raw materials; the extruder, which forms the central part of the system; and the storage tanks into which the final product is pumped. The process is energy-optimized and is regulated based on capacity. Precise dosing technology enables exact quantities of raw materials to be added in the form of liquids, powders or chips. The extruder, located centrally between the dosing units and the product tanks, is the main part of the system. The rotational speed of the screws and the shear forces applied to the product determine the production performance of the system. The length of the process chamber is influenced by the combination and characteristics of the raw materials.
Buhler is also presenting a new generation of three-roll mills. The Trias 300 is designed for batches ranging from less than one litre up to approximately 75 litres, while the 600 model is suitable for batches of two litres to around 150 litres. Powerful roller pressure generates linear loads from virtually 0 N/mm to over 80 N/mm. Compared with conventional three-roll mills, this range is significantly wider, both at the lower and upper limits. The new PLC control package with integral process data logging supports product reproducibility and thus constant quality.
Buhler is also launching its new horizontal Centex bead mill at the European Coatings Show. The full-volume Perl Mill is characterized by its very high productivity, robustness, user-friendliness and energy-optimized processes. As with Buhler’s other process engineering solutions, it includes a laboratory mill as well as a wide range of production size mills.
Lastly, Buhler is introducing to industry specialists two new sizes of its MicroMedia bead mill for nano-technology applications. The new mills expand the range, making a total of three sizes available for high throughput production. The range is designed in such a way that customers can manufacture their products to exactly the same quality standards on each machine size – from the laboratory mill MicroMedia L with a grinding capacity of 0.05 liters up to the production Perl Mill with a grinding capacity of 30 liters and a throughput of over 4,000 liters per hour.
