Top honors went to Pu Gu, Ph.D., senior research and development associate, and Ryan Emerson, Ph.D., group leader for applications development, both of PPG Industries’ fiber glass business, at CAMX: The Composites and Advanced Materials Expo at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida, Oct. 13-16.
"Corrosion Resistance of E-Glass Fiber Reinforced Composites: Boron and Interface Factors," presented by Dr. Gu and co-authored with James C. Watson, PPG associate science and technology director, fiber glass, was awarded Best Overall Technical Paper by the American Composites Manufacturers Association (ACMA). The paper was also awarded Best in Track Technical Paper in ACMA’s Traditional Materials Track. The ACMA Technical Papers Committee, comprised of industry members, reviewed and voted on 45 papers for the Best Overall Technical Paper category and 14 papers for the Best in Traditional Materials Track.
Separately, the Society for the Advancement of Material and Process Engineering (SAMPE) awarded first place for Outstanding Paper to "Crash Performance of Variable Stiffness Braided Fiber Glass Composites." The paper, presented by Dr. Emerson, was co-authored by Emerson and Brandon C. Strohminger, applications engineer, A&P Technology. More than 200 technical papers were reviewed and evaluated for this top SAMPE honor.
This year’s CAMX event was created by ACMA and SAMPE to connect and advance all aspects of the world’s composites and advanced materials communities. This singular, unified event was designed to engage and promote the composites and advanced materials industry by bringing together industry leaders, research and develoopment, engineering, manufacturing, service providers and end-users to collaborate, network and conduct business.
“We are honored to be recognized by our industry colleagues with each of these awards,” said Tom Thimons, PPG global science and technology director, fiber glass. “Our global research and development team offers a tremendous amount of technical knowledge and expertise to the composite industry and marketplace. The efforts and support of our organization have enabled us to collaborate with customers, such as we did with A&P Technology, on innovative applications and in growing market segments.”
Copies of the presentation materials can be downloaded by ACMA and SAMPE members within their respective websites.
“The content of these papers supports our customer-focused strategy of delivering innovative products that meet stringent specifications and performance requirements,” said Kevin McDonald, PPG vice president, fiber glass. “Our goal is to be our customers’ trusted partner, positioning them for long-term growth.”
