PPG said its OLYMPIC SmartGuard sealer and Ambient Reactive Extrusion additive manufacturing process technologies earned 2018 R&D 100 awards in the Mechanical Devices/Materials and Processing/Prototyping categories.
“The R&D 100 awards are one of the most sought-after recognitions for R&D innovation, and PPG is proud to be acknowledged by the global research and development community for its advancements in coatings technologies,” said David Bem, PPG VP, science and technology, and chief technology officer. “PPG continues to manufacture market-leading innovations through world-class R&D capabilities, which help our customers improve productivity, are easy to use and deliver exceptional results.”
The award-winning products include:
Olympic SmartGuard multi-surface waterproof sealer
A first-of-its-kind in North America, Olympic SmartGuard is a concentrated clear multi-surface waterproofer in a pouch formulated for easy use and spray application. Available on HomeDepot.com, the product dries in as little as one hour, and a single pouch can cover as much as two gallons of traditional waterproofing products.
Ambient Reactive Extrusion additive manufacturing for 3D printing
Co-developed with Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Ambient Reactive Extrusion delivers 3D printing up to 100 times faster than traditional 3D printing. With Ambient Reactive Extrusion, a wide range of material properties can be included in one print, and the chemical bond that forms between print layers provides unprecedented part strength.
PPG’s AERO LIGHT & EASY lightweight paint available in Europe and Low Temperature Cure coating system developed for Ferrari was also nominated as finalists in the R&D 100 Mechanical Devices/Materials category.
The R&D 100 Awards Committee and R&D Magazine honor the 100 most innovative technologies and services of the past year with the R&D 100 Awards. PPG has won 26 R&D 100 Awards through the years.
In 2017, 32 percent of PPG’s total sales were from sustainable-advantaged products and processes, such as these award-winning technologies. PPG’s goal is to achieve 40 percent sales from products and processes that have improved sustainability over products being replaced by 2025. Additional information is available in the company’s Sustainability Report.
