3M Innovative Properties has been awarded a patent for a light diffusing adhesive.
The product is comprised of a PSA matrix with a refractive index of n1 filled with organic polymeric microparticles having an average diameter of about 0.5 µm to about 30 µm and having a refractive index of n2, such that n1-n2 is in the range of 0.01 to 0.2 and the combination of the PSA matrix and the organic polymeric micro-particles has a transmittance of greater than 80% of incident intensity and a backscatter of less than 20%. The PSA matrix is a film former or a pressure sensitive microsphere-based adhesive composition and the organic polymeric microparticles are prepared from fluorinated acrylate monomers or fluorinated methacrylate mono-mers having refractive indices in the range of 1.34 to 1.44.
