A 2003 U.S. Federal Laboratory Consortium (FLC) award for excellence in technology transfer has been given to Toshifumi Sugama of the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Brookhaven National Laboratory and Keith Gawlik of DOE’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory for the development and transfer of the CurraLon coating system, a “smart,” high-performance coating. CurraLon controls corrosion, oxidation and fouling on ferrous and nonferrous metal surfaces in harsh environments at temperatures up to 260°C. The coating has three layers: a zinc phosphate ceramic primer that provides cathodic protection and bonds to the substrate, a middle layer of carbon-fiber-rein
