Dow Coating Materials, a business unit of The Dow Chemical Company, will highlight ACOUSTICRYL Liquid-Applied Sound Damping (LASD) Technology, an advanced noise mitigation coatings technology for cars, white goods and a range of other applications, at this year’s SAE Noise and Vibration Conference and Exhibition. ACOUSTICRYL provides excellent sound damping performance in an easy spray alternative to conventional polyurethane foam, asphaltic membranes and viscoelastic materials. This technology will be the focus of live demos and a technical presentation at the premier noise, vibration and harshness conference, June 22-25 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. “We developed ACOUSTICRYL LASD Technology based on feedback from customers who indicated a need for flexible, easy-to-apply, low-VOC capable coatings solutions to reduce noise and vibration in home appliances, cars and commercial architecture,” said Raymond Somich II, North America Marketing Manager, Dow Coating Materials. “The shift from steel-frame to unibody construction in automotive manufacturing and recent auto industry growth has increased the need for noise reduction materials that help original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) achieve faster model redesigns and line flexibility.” Traditionally, bitumen pads are placed between door frames, under floor boards and other vibrating parts of a car to help to dampen sound by reducing the mechanical vibrations that create unwanted noise. These pads need to be stocked in various shapes and sizes, then trimmed before application. In contrast, ACOUSTICRYL Acrylic Resins require less inventory and storage space, generate a smaller amount of material waste and are compatible with automated application for reduced labor cost. These waterborne acrylic binders can also help to reduce workers’ exposure to VOC emissions. “Using a one-step spray process, OEMs can apply ACOUSTICRYL Acrylic Resins at various thicknesses depending on the levels of sound damping needed,” Somich said. “This flexibility enables complete coverage on multiple configurations, including areas that would otherwise be hard to reach.” ACOUSTICRYL Acrylic Resins can help decrease vehicle weight for increased gas mileage, improved safety ratings and heightened passenger protection. ACOUSTICRYL Acrylic Resins can be used in any application that could benefit from sound management and reduced noise, vibration and harshness. These include commercial transportation (marine, rail, bus); agriculture and construction equipment; appliances (washing machine, dishwasher, air conditioner); and infrastructure (roof, floor, wall, duct, service conduit). For optimized performance, ACOUSTICRYL Technology may be combined with AVANSE Acrylic Emulsion Technology from Dow for an improved dispersion quality. ACOUSTICRYL with AVANSE Technology offers improved damping performance at equivalent coating weight or equal performance with a notable reduction in coating weight. It also allows formulators to use less latex and more filler for lower formulation costs without a significant drop in performance.
