Entries are now being accepted for Tnemec’s 2016 Tank of the Year competition, announced Doug Hansen, director of sales, Water Tank Market. All tank styles are eligible and the deadline for nominating projects is Oct. 3.

“We look forward to another great year of recognizing the aesthetic, creative and innovative uses of Tnemec coatings on water storage tanks,” Hansen explained. “It’s amazing how the contest has grown during the past decade. It has become a great way to showcase what’s going on in the water tank industry. Fabricators, contractors and owners can take pride in being associated with projects that are nominated for Tank of the Year.”

Nominations can be submitted electronically by visiting www.tnemec.com/tankoftheyear. Photos must accompany all nomination forms. Once the deadline has passed, photographs of all nominated water tanks will be posted on the contest website, available Oct. 4-14, where the general public can vote for the People’s Choice.

The People’s Choice will automatically be considered among 11 other committee-determined runners-up for the official Tank of the Year crown. A committee of water tank enthusiasts will judge these finalists based on artistic value, significance of the tank to the surrounding community and challenges encountered during the project. The overall winner of the 2016 Tank of the Year contest will be announced Friday, October 21.

Last year’s Tank of the Year winner stands 156 ft. above the beaches of Cocoa, Fla., wrapped with three American flags and the town’s logo, all painted using high-performance Tnemec coating systems. This legged-tank has incorporated Tnemec systems on its interior and exterior for decades, utilizing the latest technology each time a recoat was needed.

“To help keep this tank shining for years to come, an advanced fluoropolymer coating system, featuring Series 700 HydroFlon, was selected to provide the exterior and logo with unprecedented color and gloss retention,” Hanson observed.

In 2015, more than 200 tanks were nominated for the contest. The public cast a total of 20,703 online votes.

“The Tank of the Year competition has gained popularity in the industry since its inception in 2006,” Hansen added. “Since then, the competition has grown each year while attracting local and national media attention from television networks and print publications.”

Previous years’ winners include the Rosemont, Ill., pedestal tank in 2006; the Anderson, S.C., hot air balloon tanks in 2007; the Lake Villa, Ill., Providence at Painted Lakes pedestal tank in 2008; the Darree Fields Hydropillar in Dublin, Ohio, in 2009; the Newton, Kan. composite tank in 2010; the Hollywood, Fla., “Turtle” legged tank in 2011; Okaloosa County, Fla., elevated tank in 2012; a 500,000 gallon elevated tank in Mt. Vernon, Ill., in 2013; and a composite elevated tank in Midland, Texas, in 2014.
