Pflaumer Brothers, Inc. of Ewing, N.J., United States, introduced a new amine-functional resin for polyurea polyaspartic coatings used on concrete, metal, plastic composites, wood and other substrates. The polyaspartic amine, designated Teraspartic 230, is characterized by low viscosity, high reactivity, and fast gellation that are ideal for specialty applications such as patching compounds, sealants, gel coats, caulks, pore fillers and puttys. The product can also be used in combination with other polyaspartic amines, or together with other amine functional resins or hydroxy-functional acrylic resins to formulate fast-setting clear and pigmented coatings without solvent for highly productive one-coat systems. Together with Teraspartic 230, Pflaumer also offers Teraspartic 277 and Teraspartic 292, which are stearically hindered aliphatic amines that react with polyisocyanates to form high-gloss, weather-resistant coatings with good film build and rapid cure rates. Polyaspartic coatings are used in high-performance applications requiring fast cure, low VOC, and low odor. These coatings exhibit a combination of strength, flexibility and impact resistance, ideal for industrial coatings such as on agricultural and construction machinery, for OEM coatings requiring corrosion protection, plastic composites such as wind turbines, and for use on resurfacing concrete floors. They can be formulated with no VOC’s, no odor, and with a tack-free time of as little as a few seconds. Polyaspartic coatings are particularly useful for application on concrete floors in food processing plants to meet USDA regulations and the requirements of UL for the ANSI-NSF 61 Standard. Not limited to temperature extremes in application, polyaspartics can handle rigorous cleaning with chemicals, detergents, and steam to provide seamless, flexible protection for concrete floors. Polyaspartic coatings dry efficiently at room temperature, a distinct advantage for the applicator. In addition, the applicator can apply polyaspartic coatings as thick films in one coat rather than two or more, again with the added productivity of fast-cure. These qualities allow for use in direct-to-metal application in paint shops, for putty and patching compounds with rapid dry sandability, and for gel coats. “Pflaumer also offers 34 colors for polyaspartics, including those for use on-site as color packs,” said Craig McNair, Pflaumer’s chief operating officer. “We also developed a new deaerator and flow-control additive for polyaspartic coatings, designated Tallicin 4040, which we think is the most effective bubble-release agent on the market for polyaspartic coatings.”
