Sika Automotive is a nominee for the 2016 Altair Enlighten Award for its SikaPower Crash-Resistant Adhesive Technology on the 2016 BMW 7 Series vehicles. SikaPower is one of 21 overall nominees for the award. For the new BMW 7 Series, innovative SikaPower adhesive technology enabled the bonding of CFRP to steel, and aluminum to steel. This innovated adhesive solution solves the challenge of joining dissimilar materials with different coefficients of thermal expansion. SikaPower® is a crash-resistant adhesive designed to have the optimal balance of modulus, elongation and strength to provide necessary adhesion performance while also preventing failure during the vehicle’s service life. SikaPower® technology is a key enabler of lightweight, mixed-material construction in the BMW 7 Series. “Our 4th generation SikaPower adhesives are dedicated to lightweighting initiatives. While the first three generations addressed improved car body stiffening, maximal crash resistance and optimal processing, this product was really designed to address car body lightweighting. It adheres perfectly to lightweight substrates, such as aluminum or CRFP, allows for different thermal elongations of these substrates and prevents tension peaks, which can cause substrate damage. In addition to these lightweighting benefits, the 4th generation SikaPower adhesives maintain the excellent properties of the former generations and ensure vehicle integrity throughout the service life of the vehicle,” says Urs Jaeger, Sika Global Head of Automotive Technologies. The Altair Enlighten Award is intended to honor the greatest achievements in vehicle weight; to inspire interest from industry, engineering, policymakers, educators, students and the public; to create further competition for new ideas in the industry; and to provide an incentive to share technological advances. “We at Sika know adhesives make invaluable contributions to vehicle lightweighting – allowing for innovative new ways of designing and constructing vehicles to be lighter, greener and stronger, too. It’s especially an honor when the significance of these contributions are recognized by the industry on a larger scale,” says Greg Moran, Vice President of Global Automotive Marketing for Sika. The 2016 Altair Enlighten Award will be presented in collaboration with the Center for Automotive Research (CAR) at the 2016 CAR Management Briefing Seminars taking place in Traverse City, Mich. from August 1st-4th.
