Syensqo officially opened its new microbiology, (eco-)toxicology and biotechnology laboratory in Lyon, France. Covering 550 m², the facility is now the company’s largest microbiology lab worldwide and is set to serve as a reference centre for biodegradability and environmental safety testing. The lab will support early-stage product development, with a focus on accelerating time-to-market for sustainable solutions across various sectors, including beauty and personal care, home care, agrochemicals, adhesives and materials.

Fully integrated into Syensqo’s global research network, the lab will collaborate closely with other facilities to streamline testing processes. Featuring advanced machine learning tools and automated systems, the lab is expected to increase testing capacity tenfold compared to 2021. The building itself was constructed with sustainability in mind, achieving a 35 % reduction in net power consumption and a 36 % cut in CO₂ emissions.

The company is aiming to achieve GLP (Good Laboratory Practice) accreditation by the second half of 2025. This will allow the lab to support product registration processes. In addition, Syensqo plans to offer its new testing capabilities to customers and partners as part of a service model – particularly for products that are difficult to evaluate in terms of biodegradability.

“Our new microbiology lab significantly enhances our ability to create safe and biodegradable solutions,” said Thomas Canova, Head of Research and Innovation and of the Renewable Materials a
