Even though we have been dealing with nanomaterials for years, the last decade really spawned an interest and certainly incredible R&D funding for nano research. I love this area and find some of the innovations at the atomic level incredible.
Came across something from Researchers at Missouri University of Science and Technology. They reproduced the Missouri S&T athletic logo on a nanometer-scale surface and demonstrated the color printing process without using pigment or ink. The authors report achieving “pure colors with high brightness”.
The researchers describe their “no-ink” printing method in the latest issue of the Nature Publishing Group journal Scientific Reports. A brief summary of the method may be found on the University website - - http://news.mst.edu/2015/06/researchers-demonstrate-no-ink-color-printing-with-nanomaterials . The article can also be searched on their web site: Researchers demonstrate ‘no-ink’ color printing with nanomaterials; June 6, 2015 by Andrew Careaga.
Future applications of this technology will be phenomenal. Although I think it may take several years before we see the impact of pigment-free color printing, it could become a reality in the future. It surely is innovative technology.
