According to the latest information, two people have died as a result of today’s fire in the North Harbor at BASF in Ludwigshafen. Six people suffered serious injuries, several others received light injuries. The injured were treated directly at the site or are being treated in local hospitals. Two other people are still missing. “We are deeply saddened that employees have died and several have been injured. Our deepest sympathy lies with the affected people and their families,” says Uwe Liebelt, BASF site manager Ludwigshafen. During work on a pipeline there was an explosion, which resulted in fires. The firefighting continues; the fire will be burned out under controlled conditions. There is still visible smoke. Measurements done in the air and ground do not show any increased levels of toxic substances. As the raw material supply has been interrupted, the steamcrackers and other plants were shut down at the site. As a precaution, truck drivers at Gate 15 were taken to the Bürgerhaus Oppau (Oppau community center). Gate 15 is closed; gate 3 is currently not manned and therefore not open to vehicular traffic. The turnstiles are available. All other gates can be used. Trucks can enter the site at Gate 11.
