ABNT NBR 16545:2016, a new standard published by Brazilian National Standards Organization (ABNT) titled, “Coatings of high thickness with systems of polyurea hybrids of polyurea/polyurethane - Requirements of performance” is a document that sets the performance requirements of polyurea systems, and hybrid polyurea/polyurethane systems manufactured, sold, and applied in Brazil.
ABNT NBR 16545:2016 specifies the method for determining the quality of two-component polyurea and hybrid polyurea/polyurethane coatings by setting the minimum performance requirements of two-component systems as evaluated by laboratory tests.
ABNT NBR 16545:2016 also provides field application requirements for polyurea systems and hybrid polyurea/high build polyurethane systems applied on concrete and and metal substrates using plural component spray equipment. The standard also defines a high thickness coating as having a dry film thickness greater than 500 microns (µm), as well as work prerequisites, surface preparation, pretreatment, and parameters and requirements of safety equipment.
Fernando Costa, Business Manager of VersaFlex South America and Member of SSPC was instrumental in getting ABNT NBR 16545:2016 approved. This new ABNT standard is based upon SSPC-PA 14 and SSPC-Paint 45 to help boost the knowledge and use of polyurea technology in Brazil.
“The approval of this standard by ABNT is a huge win in raising the bar for two-component polyurea systems and application in Brazil,” said Costa. “This standard will provide much needed guidance for owners, suppliers, and applicators of polyurea systems for all future applications.”
SSPC-PA 14
Field Application of Plural Component Polyurea and Polyurethane Thick Film Coatings to Concrete and Steel. The standard is intended for use by specifiers and facility owners in a manner similar to SSPC-PA 1. It supplements application instructions provided by coating manufacturers to ensure that recommended best practice is followed when applying plural component coatings.
SSPC-Paint 45
Two-Component, Thick-Film Polyurea and Polyurea/Polyurethane Hybrid Coatings, Performance-Based. SSPC-Paint 45 is designed to establish performance criteria for polyurea and polyurea/polyurethane hybrid coatings, and may be used by coating manufacturers and specifiers as a set of performance benchmarks.
