Covestro CCO Steps Down, Expected To Replace CEO in 2018

Dr. Markus Steilemann's resignation is effective Sept. 1, the company announced.

Chief Commercial Officer Dr. Markus Steilemann will step down as head of the Polyurethanes segment, a position he’s held since 2016, Covestro announced Thursday.

Steilemann, who started his career at Bayer in 1999, is in line to succeed Patrick Thomas as Covestro’s CEO, according to Dr. Frank Rothbarth, external communications.

In 2004, Steilemann moved to Bayer’s MaterialScience subgroup, which now operates independently under the name Covestro.

Previously, Steilemann held various management positions in the Polycarbonates segment in Asia, including a stint as head of Global Industrial Marketing. 

He was the head of the entire Polycarbonates segment from 2013-15 before being appointed to Covestro’s Board of Management.

Daniel Meyer, the head of the Coatings, Adhesives, Specialties segment since 2011, will be promoted in Steilemann’s place. Michael Friede will take over for Meyer.
