USGBC, the creators of the LEED green building program, announced Nobel Prize winner Dr. Mario Molina as a keynote speaker for the inaugural Greenbuild Mexico conference. He will join USGBC and GBCI President and CEO Mahesh Ramanujam on the plenary stage. Edda Fernandez Luiselli, director general for the Primary Sector and Renewable Natural Resources in the Undersecretary for Environmental Regulation and Promotion of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT), will also offer opening remarks. Greenbuild Mexico will be held in conjunction with Sustentabilidad para Mexico A.C. (SUMe) at the Camino Real Polanco Mexico hotel in Mexico City, June 19–21. Early bird registration is open through June 1. “The power of Greenbuild lies in its ability to bring together leaders from diverse backgrounds to share experiences in an effort to help us collectively work to solve some our most pressing environmental challenges,” Ramanujam said. “Dr. Molina and Ms. Fernandez Luiselli have powerful stories to share, and we are grateful for their participation in and support of Greenbuild Mexico.” Molina co-wrote an article predicting the thinning of the ozone layer that won him and his partner the Nobel Prize in chemistry. Molina’s research and publications on the topic also led to the Montreal Protocol of the United Nations, the first international treaty that has effectively faced an environmental problem of global scale and human origin. Molina served on the President’s Committee of Advisors in Science and Technology from 1994 to 2000 and from 2010 to 2016, for presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, respectively. He is currently a professor at the University of California, San Diego, with a joint appointment in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. “Climate change is the number one threat humanity is facing; the welfare not only of our generation, but also of future generations depends on the actions we take today as a global society,” Molina said. “I am honored to be able to speak about the science and policy of climate change during this event.” Fernandez Luiselli’s work with the Mexican Federal Government has been focused on designing regulatory and promotional resources that support the country’s green and sustainable growth. She also serves as co-chair of the Board for the UN Environment 10 Year Framework of Programs on Sustainable Production and Consumption. Fernandez Luiselli will help welcome attendees to the conference during the Opening Plenary on June 19. Greenbuild Mexico will take place over three days and offer attendees the opportunity to hear from industry leaders on their vision for the future of green building in the country; to connect with industry professionals and build business relationships; and to learn the latest green building and LEED research, while earning continuing education hours at educational sessions. Across Mexico, there are more than 620 LEED professionals and more than 1,000 projects participating in LEED, representing more than 31 million gross square meters of building space.
