    [body] => PPG was selected by Boeing Defence Australia to supply coatings for repainting the vertical stabilizers of an EA-18G GROWLER® aircraft for the No. 6 Squadron of the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). Boeing repainted the tails of the airborne electronic attack aircraft in a special paint scheme to commemorate the squadron’s 100th anniversary in 2017.
 
In four days, the PPG team at the Tullamarine, Victoria, Aerospace Application Support Center (ASC) blended, tested, packed and shipped PPG DESOTHANE 8221 military and defense topcoat in six specially made colors – red, yellow, light blue, dark blue, black and white. Boeing received the coatings on time to repaint the tails of the EA-18G Growler attack aircraft for delivery to RAAF’s Base Amberley, Queensland.
 
“We moved heaven and earth to make sure we delivered,” said Paul Camilleri, PPG military account manager, Aerospace, Australia and New Zealand. “Our standard lead time is seven days, but corrections for difficult colors can extend that. Although the dark blue color for the RAAF paint scheme was uncommon, we were able to blend and ship it within four days. We all worked as a team to prioritize the order.”
 
The PPG ASC-Australia is part of a worldwide network that connects PPG global aerospace resources with a regional base. It is one of many centers having paint color-matching and blending capabilities.
 
“We have the equipment on-site and a team experienced in color mixing, which gave us the resources for an on-time delivery,” Camilleri said.
 
PPG also supplied PPG DESOPRIME HS 7255 military epoxy primer, which was applied over the existing scuffed topcoat to enhance adhesion of the new PPG Desothane 8221 coating application.
 
Formed in 1917, the RAAF No. 6 Squadron was disbanded in 1919 and reformed in 1939.

The project brought together more than 30 PPG volunteers, who spent four hours painting classrooms at the school. PPG provided $9,300 to assist with the project, including more than 740 liters (195 gallons) of ASIAN PAINTS paint products.
 
A color palette that included pink, yellow, green and blue was chosen to provide a bright and colorful learning environment. The school, which has around 400 students in the sixth through 12th standards, is the only higher secondary school for boys in Sriperumbudur and serves more than 30 surrounding villages.

Mcity’s work includes operating the Mcity Test Facility, which is the world’s first purpose-built proving ground for testing autonomous vehicles, connected-vehicle systems and related technologies. PPG is the first paints and coatings manufacturer to join the Mcity partnership.
 
A leader in advanced paints and coatings technologies for the automotive industry, PPG is developing a broad portfolio of coatings to improve functionality and enable broad deployment of autonomous vehicles. These developments include exterior coatings that enhance vehicle visibility to radar and light detection and ranging (LIDAR) systems, as well as easy-to-clean coatings that help prevent obstruction of autonomous vehicle sensors. PPG will highlight these technologies at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) Jan. 14-20 at Cobo Center in Detroit.
 
The Mcity Test Facility, which opened in 2015, was developed by U-M with support from the Michigan Department of Transportation. The facility aims to re-create a range of operating challenges faced by vehicles on the road with simulated urban and suburban environments. Sitting on a 32-acre site on U-M’s North Campus, the facility offers more than 16 acres of roads and traffic infrastructure, including approximately five lane-miles of roads with intersections, traffic signals, street lighting, sidewalks, fire hydrants, simulated buildings and obstacles like construction barriers and pedestrian crash dummies. In addition to operating the test facility, Mcity also funds academic research and works with its partners to deploy connected and automated vehicles in Ann Arbor and Southeast Michigan.
 
“Autonomous vehicle technology offers numerous real-world advantages, and the ability to test such technologies safely and thoroughly is essential for proving the viability of advanced mobility solutions,” said Huei Peng, director, Mcity. “Our state-of-the-art facility offers a controlled environment for manufacturers like PPG to develop and hone the capabilities of autonomous vehicles and related technologies, while also providing them access to a variety of valuable tools and resources. We’re excited to have PPG be part of this journey.”
 
Added Gary Danowski, PPG vice president, Automotive OEM Coatings, “Specialized coatings will play an integral role in the development of safe and reliable driverless vehicles. The agreement provides PPG with access to resources such as Mcity lab and project data; research and deployment assets; an independent forum of suppliers, manufacturers and end users; university expertise related to legal, regulatory and social issues; and Mcity research review meetings and the annual Mcity Congress.

The project brought together 110 PPG global leaders as part of an annual global leadership meeting as well as 20 local PPG employees. The volunteers spent a combined 385 hours revitalizing the school’s outdoor science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education classroom, hallways, cafeteria and the library. PPG provided approximately $54,000 to assist with the project, including a $10,000 PPG Foundation grant and 100 gallons of PPG Paints products. Volunteers painted the facility with inspirational quotes and popular book characters in a palette of over 30 PPG Paints colors. The colors were chosen to create a bright, engaging space that encourages creativity, collaboration and learning.

In addition, they will use the garden area to promote sustainable living and healthy eating by growing fruits and vegetables.

The innovative clear liquid is sprayed onto freshly applied polysulfide aerospace sealant to improve aesthetics and cut surface cure time to as little as two hours.
 
PPG Pro-Seal 815M spray, which comes ready to use in a non-aerosol recyclable pump bottle, is sprayed in a light mist onto wet sealant. The application-friendly spray helps break the surface tension of the wet sealant, allowing for easier smoothing and fairing to achieve final required dimensions and optimal appearance. It cures the surface of the sealant to a tack-free state in two to three hours at 25° C (77° F) compared with the standard six to 40 or more hours required for untreated sealant to obtain the same condition.
 
According to Bill Keller, PPG global market segment manager, aerospace sealants, using PPG Pro-Seal815M spray has the potential to reduce aircraft assembly times.
 
“I have never met a customer who was not actively looking for ways to speed up the sealing process of an aircraft, while also expecting the applied sealant to look perfect,” Keller said. “Virtually every aircraft requires application of sealant for environmental boundary isolation, from integral fuel tanks to the joints of the entire fuselage structure. The artisans who apply aerospace sealants commonly spend vast amounts of time tooling the sealant to meet dimensional and appearance specifications. To accelerate this process, they often use unapproved solvents that could be detrimental to the sealant’s performance and longevity. PPG Pro-Seal 815M spray is an easier-to-use product that meets our customers’ need for reduced aircraft sealing cycle time and improved appearance.”

Mcity’s work includes operating the Mcity Test Facility, which is the world’s first purpose-built proving ground for testing autonomous vehicles, connected-vehicle systems and related technologies. PPG is the first paints and coatings manufacturer to join the Mcity partnership.
 
A leader in advanced paints and coatings technologies for the automotive industry, PPG is developing a broad portfolio of coatings to improve functionality and enable broad deployment of autonomous vehicles. These developments include exterior coatings that enhance vehicle visibility to radar and light detection and ranging (LIDAR) systems, as well as easy-to-clean coatings that help prevent obstruction of autonomous vehicle sensors. PPG will highlight these technologies at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) Jan. 14-20 at Cobo Center in Detroit.
 
The Mcity Test Facility, which opened in 2015, was developed by U-M with support from the Michigan Department of Transportation. The facility aims to re-create a range of operating challenges faced by vehicles on the road with simulated urban and suburban environments. Sitting on a 32-acre site on U-M’s North Campus, the facility offers more than 16 acres of roads and traffic infrastructure, including approximately five lane-miles of roads with intersections, traffic signals, street lighting, sidewalks, fire hydrants, simulated buildings and obstacles like construction barriers and pedestrian crash dummies. In addition to operating the test facility, Mcity also funds academic research and works with its partners to deploy connected and automated vehicles in Ann Arbor and Southeast Michigan.
 
“Autonomous vehicle technology offers numerous real-world advantages, and the ability to test such technologies safely and thoroughly is essential for proving the viability of advanced mobility solutions,” said Huei Peng, director, Mcity. “Our state-of-the-art facility offers a controlled environment for manufacturers like PPG to develop and hone the capabilities of autonomous vehicles and related technologies, while also providing them access to a variety of valuable tools and resources. We’re excited to have PPG be part of this journey.”
 
Added Gary Danowski, PPG vice president, Automotive OEM Coatings, “Specialized coatings will play an integral role in the development of safe and reliable driverless vehicles. We are enthusiastic about this partnership and are always actively seeking additional R&D partners as we continue to explore new possibilities in emerging vehicle technologies.”
 
The agreement provides PPG with access to resources such as Mcity lab and project data; research and deployment assets; an independent forum of suppliers, manufacturers and end users; university expertise related to legal, regulatory and social issues; and Mcity research review meetings and the annual Mcity Congress.

The Colorful Communities program provides PPG volunteers and paint products along with financial contributions to bring color and vitality to communities where the company operates around the world, such as in Miami, where PPG has 16 PPG PAINTS stores and plans to open five more in 2018.
 
The project brought together 110 PPG global leaders as part of an annual global leadership meeting as well as 20 local PPG employees. The volunteers spent a combined 385 hours revitalizing the school’s outdoor science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education classroom, hallways, cafeteria and the library. PPG provided approximately $54,000 to assist with the project, including a $10,000 PPG Foundation grant and 100 gallons of PPG Paints products. Volunteers painted the facility with inspirational quotes and popular book characters in a palette of over 30 PPG Paints colors. The colors were chosen to create a bright, engaging space that encourages creativity, collaboration and learning.

A focal point of the newly-renovated school will be an outdoor classroom that brings STEM curriculum to life, providing educators an innovative way to teach hands-on STEM subjects. Because the school believes STEM touches all subjects, all teachers will be welcomed to utilize the area. In addition, they will use the garden area to promote sustainable living and healthy eating by growing fruits and vegetables.

The innovative clear liquid is sprayed onto freshly applied polysulfide aerospace sealant to improve aesthetics and cut surface cure time to as little as two hours.
 
PPG Pro-Seal 815M spray, which comes ready to use in a non-aerosol recyclable pump bottle, is sprayed in a light mist onto wet sealant. The application-friendly spray helps break the surface tension of the wet sealant, allowing for easier smoothing and fairing to achieve final required dimensions and optimal appearance. It cures the surface of the sealant to a tack-free state in two to three hours at 25° C (77° F) compared with the standard six to 40 or more hours required for untreated sealant to obtain the same condition.
 
According to Bill Keller, PPG global market segment manager, aerospace sealants, using PPG Pro-Seal815M spray has the potential to reduce aircraft assembly times.
 
“I have never met a customer who was not actively looking for ways to speed up the sealing process of an aircraft, while also expecting the applied sealant to look perfect,” Keller said. “Virtually every aircraft requires application of sealant for environmental boundary isolation, from integral fuel tanks to the joints of the entire fuselage structure. The artisans who apply aerospace sealants commonly spend vast amounts of time tooling the sealant to meet dimensional and appearance specifications. To accelerate this process, they often use unapproved solvents that could be detrimental to the sealant’s performance and longevity. PPG Pro-Seal 815M spray is an easier-to-use product that meets our customers’ need for reduced aircraft sealing cycle time and improved appearance.”
