Sun Chemical’s attendance at the European Coatings Show 2019 held in Nuremberg, Germany on March 19-21 was considered a success and was an important venue for the company to showcase its technical expertise and full range of pigment and resin solutions for the marketplace. “This year’s European Coatings Show was an overwhelmingly positive experience for Sun Chemical,” said Michael Venturini, marketing director, Coatings, Sun Chemical Performance Pigments. “Not only did we see tremendous foot traffic at our booth, but it also allowed us to reach customers, potential customers, formulators and industrial applicators in various market segments, including automotive, architectural, powder and industrial coatings. It was also a great chance to share our technical expertise with formulators to build their basic knowledge of optics and pigment science on a variety of topics.” During the show, four Sun Chemical experts presented educational technical sessions on some of the most important pigments and additives used in the coatings market. Anthony Rohrer, a product specialist in effect pigments, gave a presentation entitled “Introduction to SunMICA and Benda-Lutz Metallic Pigments in Coatings” on Tuesday, March 19. The lecture provided a foundation for those new to effect pigments and strengthened the knowledge of those already familiar with them. Rohrer gave an in-depth overview of the various types of pearlescent pigments and metallic pigments while also teaching about basic optics, luster, multi-layer reflection, interference color theory, particle size measurement techniques, and formulation guidelines when dealing with hiding power, orientation and anti-settling. Alex Gibson, a product specialist in high-performance pigments, delivered a technology review on March 19 of Sun Chemical’s Quindo and Fanchon pigment product lines to those wishing to expand their technical understanding of high-performance pigments. During the presentation, Gibson provided foundational information to assist in value-based pigment selection, dispersion optimization, and problem-solving color related challenges while also covering the latest advancements in Quinacridone Red 122, Perylene Red 179, Yellow 139 and Yellow 151.
