RadTech, the nonprofit for ultraviolet, electron beam, and light emitting diode (UV/EB/LED) manufacturing technologies, has announced its support of the US Environmental Protection Agency’s celebration of Pollution Prevention (P2) Week, Sept. 19-25, 2022. The celebration recognizes “practices that eliminate or reduce the amount and toxicity of potentially harmful substances at their source, thereby preventing or minimizing pollution, rather than controlling it once it is generated.” “As far back as 1997, during testimony to a U.S. Senate Committee, the U.S. EPA Administrator acknowledged UV/EB technology as an example of a cost-effective approach taken by industry to reduce air pollution,” according to Susan Bailey, president of RadTech, with Michelman. “UV/EB/LED technologies not only help prevent pollution, but offer substantial efficiency, quality, and process control benefits to manufacturers.” UV/EB/LED materials are virtually free of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), do not contain hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) and do not require industrial ovens or the need to employ add-on pollution controls, thereby preventing emissions of greenhouse gases. “UV/EB/LED processes have been recognized by local and national regulators, as pollution prevention strategies,” said Rita Loof, RadTech senior director of Regulatory Affairs. “California adopted a Senate resolution encouraging the adoption of UV/EB/LED as a pollution prevention technology, recognizing the industry’s contribution to the retention of manufacturing jobs in California. RadTech was also honored with a Clean Air Award from the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD), for Excellence in Advancement in Air Pollution Technology, and the SCAQMD has deemed UV/EB technology Best Available Control Technology.”
