Holiferm and Fibenol Develop Sustainable Biosurfactants

Hoilferm and Fibernol partnered to develop biosurfactants using Fibenol woold sugars, providing a greener alternative to traditional surfactants.
 
Biosurfactants are derived from non-renewable resources and can have a negative environmental impact. However, Fibenol found a way to convert wood residues into lignocellulosic sugars, which are better for the environment and are non-food competitive. In using this fermentation, Holiferm is able to develop a new generation of biosurfactants with a lower carbon footprint.
 
“Even though we are still young and relatively small companies, we believe that by working together, we can have a bigger impact and create faster solutions to tackle the climate challenge. Besides, this collaboration is a significant step forward in our mission to manufacture on a net zero scope 3 basis, which will only be possible of we transition to even more sustainable raw materials,” said Holiferm’s business development manager Joana Pereira.
 
Fibenol CDO Peep Pitk commented, “Carbon serves as the foundation for numerous essential products required both now and in the future. However, the availability of sustainable sources and processes to harness carbon is currently quite limited. We know we have a superior sugar stream in terms of environmental impact, and we are eager to demonstrate the efficient conversation of forestry residues into valuable biosurfactants by combining the technologies from Fibernol and Holiferm.”
 
The nest phase of the collaboration starts in July 2023 and is expected to have significant impact on home and personal care, coatings, paints, textiles, and agriculture industries.
