Covestro announced that it is collaborating with logistics company DB Cargo BTT for a more efficient and sustainable transport of chemicals, including methylene diphenyl isocyanate (MDI), a chemical raw material used in a variety of polyurethane materials, to and within Poland.

DB Cargo BTT will provide Covestro with an end-to-end transport solution that it says combines several sustainable approaches. The chemicals are transported in tank containers from the production sites of Covestro in Germany to a nearby railway terminal using bio-fuel (HVO 100)-driven trucks. The tank containers are then transported to a distribution center in Poland via rail, keeping trucks off the road and saving respective emissions. Bio-fuel (HVO 100)-driven trucks are deployed to distribute the chemicals to end customers in Poland. Altogether, the company says the combination of these modes of transport saves at least 70% of CO2 emissions compared to conventional road transport methods.

This includes improving load capacity, selecting the best transport modes and routes, and introducing using sustainable and future-oriented energy sources like green electricity or HVO to replace fossil fuels.”
