Third-largest Chemetall production site globally runs 100% on renewable electricity from BASF Renewable Energy.

The Surface Treatment global business unit of BASF’s Coatings division, operating under the Chemetall brand, has made a significant advancement in its sustainability journey by transitioning its Langelsheim production facility in Germany to 100% renewable electricity. This move is another significant step towards Chemetall’s ambitious goal of utilizing 80% renewable energy across all its sites by 2025. The renewable electricity, provided by BASF Renewable Energy, is sourced from a mix of solar and wind power, leading to an estimated reduction of approximately 620 tons of CO2 emissions in 2025. Following the introduction of state-of-the-art photovoltaic systems in its Boksburg facility, South Africa, in Cayirova, Türkiye, in Querétaro, Mexcio, and the utilization of 100% renewable electricity in its production site in Blackman Township in Jackson County, USA, Chemetall has switched its Langelsheim production facility in Germany to 100% renewable electricity as well. Thanks to Virtual Power Purchase Agreements (vPPAs) with BASF Renewable Energy, Chemetall sources approximately 2.000 MWh per year, generated by a subset of renewable resources, including solar and wind. This results in a corresponding reduction of CO2 emissions, marking an important next step for Chemetall in achieving its sustainability targets. “We are committed to sustainability at Chemetall and have the ambitious goal of utilizing 80% renewable electricity across all our sites globally in 2025. Operating our Langelsheim production site 100% on renewable electricity is an important milestone for us as it is our third largest production facility worldwide. The CO2 reduction of approximately 620 tons per year means a significant reduction of our carbon footprint and we will continue to improve it by adopting renewable energy sources. Contributing to a more sustainable future is a high priority for us as an organization in general, and we can support our customers in reducing their environmental impact as well. Especially our aerospace customers benefit from this initiative in Langelsheim as it is one of our key production facilities for aerospace sealants technologies,” says Frank Naber, senior vice president of Chemetall. With approximately 230 employees, Langelsheim is the largest production site in the region Europe, Middle East, Africa and South America, as well as the third largest Chemetall production site globally. The transition of the Langelsheim site to renewable electricity plays a pivotal role in achieving Chemetall’s goal in utilizing 80% renewable electricity globally in 2025 and therefore lowering emissions from operations to reduce its climate impact. By empowering customers to increase their environmental performance, Chemetall supports BASF´s and BASF Coatings’ goals for sustainable progress.
