It’s the beginning of summer, and homeowners are already enjoying the outdoors. Whether it is their backyards or on their deck, Krylon offers the opportunity to create a fresh new look, whether it is a door, fences, decorative highlights such as a light, planters or shutters, or so much more.
Krylon recently released its 2024 Summer Trends Report, featuring ideas from Ashley Banbury, Krylon’s color marketing manager and NCIDQ-certified designer. With more than 15 years of experience in the design community, Banbury cites three trends – Dopamine Décor, Outdoor Living Spaces and Vertical Planting – including Bluebird, Krylon’s 2024 Color of the Year.
Dopamine Décor includes bold colors and patterns, such as bright blues, reds and yellows. Outdoor Living Spaces includes natural elements, while Vertical Planting encompasses greenery solutions.
Banbury says that enhancing the exterior of your home goes beyond curb appeal, as it creates an inviting sanctuary that boosts emotional well-being.
“Your outdoor space reflects personal pride and style, offering a place to relax, entertain, and connect with nature,” said Banbury. “Moreover, these updates can significantly increase property value, making your home more appealing to potential buyers.”
There are many opportunities to freshen up a home’s outdoor space.
"From updating house numbers for a modern touch to adding vibrant planters that complement your home’s style, there are numerous ways to enhance your outdoor space,” Banbury noted. “Consider repainting an outdated front door with a bold color or refreshing lighting fixtures to brighten up your entryway. Revitalize your mailbox or vinyl shutters with Krylon for a fresh look that enhances curb appeal.
“For a cozy outdoor retreat, add a porch swing with Krylon to create a welcoming atmosphere for family gatherings or quiet moments,” she added. “Brighten up your facade with DIY hanging garden lanterns for a warm, inviting glow. You can also add a decorative lattice flower wall to bring beautiful, intricate detail to your outdoor space. Each of these projects not only improves aesthetics but also transforms your home into a personal oasis.”
Banbury said that Krylon has seen a rise in Dopamine Decor, where vibrant colors, playful patterns, and a mix of vintage and contemporary elements are used to create uplifting sanctuaries.
“This trend aims to infuse joy and personal style into home interiors,” Banbury added. “Concurrently, there's a growing trend of extending indoor living to the outdoors, as more people design luxurious yet functional spaces for dining, entertaining, and relaxation. Additionally, homeowners are increasingly integrating greenery into their environments with vertical gardens, creatively maximizing limited space to add a natural touch and enhance aesthetic appeal. These trends highlight a shift towards harmonious and visually appealing living spaces that cater to both aesthetic and functional needs."
Banbury said that Dopamine Décor, named after the feel-good neurotransmitter, is a trend that aims to evoke a sense of happiness, warmth and nostalgia through vibrant colors, layered textures, and playful patterns that reflect the homeowner’s personality and style.
“This design aesthetic creates joyful living environments by utilizing vivid blues, rich reds, energetic yellows, and other colors, to infuse energy and positivity,” Banbury observed. “Key to this trend is the art of mixing and matching, where geometric shapes and whimsical designs add visual interest to walls, cushions, and accents. Dopamine Décor blends vintage and contemporary elements seamlessly, allowing for a personalized and distinctive look that offers a delightful element of surprise in any space."
The Krylon 2024 Color of the Year is Bluebird, which Banbury said fits the trends very well.
"The Krylon 2024 Color the Year, Bluebird, is a calming pastel hue that evokes a sense of tranquility and connection with nature,” Banbury said. “This color enhances outdoor living spaces by complementing natural tones and textures, creating a serene environment. Its versatility makes it ideal for revitalizing outdoor furniture and decor, bringing a refreshing touch to any outdoor setting."
Spanish Moss, a rich green, was Krylon’s 2023 Color of the Year. Banbury noted that Spanish Moss fits well with the trend toward Outdoor Living Spaces.
"Spanish Moss's rich green tone aligns perfectly with the trend of integrating natural elements into home design, known as Biophilic design,” Banbury said. “In 2024, there is a strong emphasis on creating harmonious indoor-outdoor spaces that promote sustainability and relaxation. Spanish Moss enhances these environments, blending seamlessly with other trending colors like Bluebird to create cohesive and calming living spaces, inspired by nature’s soothing palette."
There is more to beautifying outdoor spaces than aesthetics.
"Beyond color, consumers seek functionality and comfort when updating outdoor living spaces,” Banbury reported. “There’s a growing trend of extending indoor amenities outdoors, creating versatile spaces for dining, entertaining, and relaxation. These areas serve as retreats from daily routines, fostering a deeper connection with nature and promoting overall well-being.
"As homeowners explore ways to enhance their outdoor spaces, consider the transformative impact of thoughtful design and quality products,” Banbury concluded. “Whether through DIY projects or professional upgrades, products like Krylon offer innovative solutions to personalize and beautify your home’s exterior, creating inviting environments that reflect your unique style and enhance everyday living."
