BASF’s Coatings division develops, produces and markets innovative automotive coatings, automotive refinishes and industrial coatings as well as decorative paints. BASF completed the sale of its global industrial coatings businesses to AkzoNobel. The transaction includes technologies, patents and trademarks, as well as the transfer of dedicated production sites in Deeside, UK and Vanderbijlpark, South Africa.
As a result of this transaction, AkzoNobel will now operate the global coil, furniture foil and panel coatings, wind coatings and general industry businesses acquired from BASF, as well as the commercial transport business in EMEA. The remaining portfolio of the Coatings division consists of the automotive OEM and automotive refinish coatings businesses, as well as the decorative paints business with the leading brand Suvinil in Brazil.
The Coatings business has been further strengthened with the acquisition of Chemetall, a leading global supplier of applied surface treatments. Through this acquisition, BASF’s Coatings division expands its portfolio to become a more complete solutions provider. Chemetall develops and manufactures customized technology and system solutions for surface treatment. Their products protect metals from corrosion, facilitate forming and machining, allow parts to be optimally prepared for the painting process and ensure proper coating adhesion. These chemicals are used in a wide range of industries and end-markets, such as automotive, aerospace, aluminum finishing, and metal forming. Chemetall’s sales for the full calendar year of 2015 were $845 million.
BASF Breaks Ground on New Automotive Coatings Plant in Shanghai
BASF Shanghai Coatings Co., Ltd. broke ground on a new automotive coatings plant at the company’s existing site at the Shanghai Chemical Industry Park in Caojing, Shanghai, China. The new plant represents an investment of approximately €140 million and is expected to start operation in the fourth quarter of 2017.
As the latest investment of the joint venture between BASF and Shanghai Huayi Fine Chemical Co., Ltd, the new plant is an expansion of the automotive coatings plant, which began production in 2014 at the same site.
“We have been investing in parallel with the growth of the automotive industry, strengthening our presence where our customers are located. Further investment into China reflects our strong commitment to our customers in order to provide faster and more efficient solutions that support their business growth,” said Peter Fischer, senior vice president, Coatings Solutions Asia Pacific, BASF.
In addition to this new plant, BASF also operates a production facility for resins and electrocoat at the same location. The close proximity of these plants allows for more synergies and efficiency. All plants are designed in a highly energy-efficient and sustainable manner, offering the potential for future expansion and the flexibility to adapt to new production requirements in the years ahead.
