For many homeowners, an afternoon spent on a deck is the perfect way to enjoy an afternoon. However, there are a few aesthetic considerations, such as the look of the deck, and more importantly, the condition of the deck. With its BEHR PREMIUM Solid Color Premium Waterproofing Exterior Stain, BEHR PREMIUM Semi-Transparent Waterproofing Exterior Stain, BEHR PREMIUM ADVANCED DECKOVER, BEHR Solid Color House & Fence Wood Stain, and BEHR DECKPLUS available exclusively at The Home Depot, chances are when you decide to stain your deck, Behr Paint will be one of the choices you look at. This year, Behr has selected Cordovan Brown, a classic brown hue, as its first-ever Exterior Wood Stain Color of the Year. Behr notes that is versatile enough to be used by DIYers, designers, and professionals to tackle any outdoor residential or commercial project. Cordovan Brown is a classic wood stain that is versatile enough to be used by DIYers, designers, and professionals to tackle any outdoor residential or commercial project, adding that the deep hue complements a wide range of architectural styles from traditional to modern. “Our goal is to make the color selection process easier, so projects can get done quicker,” said Jodi Allen, global chief marketing officer at Behr, in announcing the selection of Cordovan Brown. “Announcing our first-ever exterior stain color of the year diversifies our color trend forecasting and delivers on the color leadership consumers can expect from Behr.” Erika Woelfel, vice president of color & creative services for Behr, observed that Behr believes that wood stains hold just as much power as paint. “They offer a polished finish on decks, porches, doors and more which can enhance the overall curb appeal,” added Woelfel. “Paint and stain can play off each other beautifully, creating a balanced color scheme on exterior surfaces and structures. Pairing darker wood tones like Cordovan Brown with soft natural paint colors creates contrast and compatibility for any style.” Woelfel said that Behr’s decision to select its first-ever stain Color of the Year was driven by the idea of making the decision-making process easier when it comes to selecting a new exterior stain. “We have an ongoing commitment to make the color selection process easier for DIYers and professionals,” Woelfel said. “During the past few years, there has been an increased focus on exterior spaces and how to spruce them up whether it is for outdoor entertainment or increased curb appeal. With warmer weather around the corner and outdoor projects to accomplish, we decided it was perfect timing to introduce our 2023 Exterior Stain Color of the Year, Cordovan Brown.” Woelfel noted that versatility was top of mind for both interior and exterior hues when Behr underwent its color selection process for 2023. “Cordovan Brown is a timeless color that comes in multiple finishes and pairs well with other neutrals to elevate an outdoor space,” Woelfel pointed out. “For example, Blank Canvas, our 2023 Color of the Year, can be used as a warm white to compliment Cordovan Brown for exterior projects, offering a balanced environment that accentuates the features of the rich color.” Color isn’t everything when it comes to stain. A high-quality stain will last longer, reducing the number of times you have to stain the deck. “Consumers should choose stains formulated with advanced weather-resistant technology to provide long-lasting protection against harsh elements, including UV rays, moisture, and weathering,” Woelfel said. “BEHR Exterior Wood Stains & Finishes are specially formulated to resist fading, cracking, and peeling, ensuring that the wood looks great for years to come.” So, when is the best time to stain your deck? “In most areas of the country, the ideal conditions for exterior staining typically come during late spring or early fall when the weather is moderately warm and dry,” Woelfel said. “Staining in the summer is also very popular but try to avoid extremely hot or humid days and try not to apply the stain in direct sunlight or on hot surfaces. Always check the weather forecast and try to choose a 24-to-48-hour window where rain is not expected to ensure proper absorption and lasting protection and follow the label instructions.”
