This year, HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams’ 2023 Color Collection of the Year Vintage Homestead was incorporated throughout the HGTV Dream Home in Morrison, CO, 

CW: What was the inspiration for The HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams Color Collection of the Year?
Banbury: Comfort is a key sentiment to bring into the home for 2022 and continuing into 2023, all of the shades in the 2023 Color Collection of the Year create a calm, soothing environment inside the home that are also versatile in many spaces.   These comfortable colors are influenced by heritage and romance, crafting a look that is familiar in an individualistic way.  

Darkroom, a beautiful black with a plum undertone that creates dimension to a space, is HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams’ 2023 Color of the Year, and embodies alluring qualities that allow it to pair perfectly with all colors from the Vintage Homestead Color Collection of the Year. These shades are classic for heritage interiors while also bringing modern retro for the throwback-inspired aesthetic.

CW: How did you incorporate this color collection into the design of the Dream Home?
Flynn: Luckily, the hues chosen for the CCOTY are remarkably close to the actual colors seen in Red Rocks which is the most iconic thing about Morrison, CO, where the house is located. I chose the deep pine greens seen outside for the main color of the great room and kitchen, then turned to the warm earth tones in shades of terra cotta, gold and brown for some of the other spaces.

CW: What are some unique features of this home?
Flynn: I love the limestone fireplace facade of the dining room. It’s so classic and timeless and offers so much rugged texture. I also love how the massive wagon wheel chandelier stands out against it.

CW: What was the inspiration for the design of the Dream Home?
Flynn: The design of the HGTV Dream Home 2023 is rooted in the history and landscape of Morrison, CO, home of the famous Red Rocks. I did not just look at your average inspiration sources…I’m talking dinosaur fossils, earthy colors seen in Red Rocks National Park and Amphitheater, relics from the Gold Rush days, and all the active lifestyles that come with Colorado like horseback riding, hiking and fly fishing. Also, dinosaurs! There is a rich history of dinosaur fossils all around Morrison, CO, and when you’re local, you see nods to them everywhere from national parks to murals and on even guided tours.

CW: As the pandemic seems to be coming to an end, do you think housing design and decorating trends will shift (increased entertaining, etc.)?
Flynn: For the past five years or so, neutrals have really taken over with several generations, and kitchens have more or less been white and understated. I am super stoked to see a lot of designers and homeowners start to embrace most saturated hues for walls and for kitchen cabinets and islands. I think making a statement with color is the easiest way to transform a house into a personalized home.
