For wood siding jobs that require long-lasting protection and high breathability, Rhino Shield offers its Self Priming Coat or SPC. Formulated with a blend of top-grade resins and ceramic spheres, the elastomeric-acrylic coating was specifically developed as primer coat for wood siding. Mike Moore, AmCoat’s director of products and applications, said all of Rhino Shield’s products are designed for long-term protection and stressed the importance of preparing wood correctly for top coating. “Wood is subject to expansion and needs both protection from the elements and breathability which is essential to prevent wood rot,” said Moore. “AmCoat has been specializing in elastomeric coatings for more than 20 years and we’ve done a tremendous amount of R&D with wood. The culmination of our research has led to a robust primer coat specifically designed for the characteristics of the wood substrate.” Designed as a primer to be followed by a top coat of Rhino Shield, Moore said SPC had a 10-year track record of successfully protecting homes. “An elastomeric-acrylic primer with superior adhesion properties and breathability stands out in the primer market — especially for wood,” said Moore. “In addition, SPC is thick, high in solids and tintable — all sought after characteristics in an effective and long-lasting primer.” Lauded by historical districts and architectural review boards for long-lasting protection for wood substrates, SPC helps greatly reduce the maintenance of these important homes and structures. “Historical districts have very specific criteria for preserving the look and original materials of the homes in the areas the oversee,” said Moore. “It takes a rigid schedule of ongoing maintenance to keep wood siding protected. A product like SPC applied before a Rhino Shield top coat allows a homeowner to protect their historic home for the long term — that’s the kind of protection Rhino Shield products offer.”
