PPG, Dutch education nonprofit C3 support Beta Tournament STEM competition for young students

PPG announced the successful conclusion of the Beta Tournament, a national competition in the Netherlands for vocational students aged 15-16. The tournament is one of the STEM activities PPG supports through its partnership with Dutch education nonprofit Centrum JongerenCommunicatie Chemie (C3), which introduces children and young people to chemistry and life sciences. The Beta Tournament took place this year at two secondary vocational education institutes – Rijn IJssel in Arnhem and Summa in Eindhoven – where students in teams of three conducted experiments with the theme of “Paint.” In Arnhem, the first prize was won by students from NSG Groenewoud in Nijmegen, and in Eindhoven the first prize went to students from Newmancollege in Breda. A total of 39 student teams participated in the competition. “We know how important a skilled STEM workforce is for creating stronger, more sustainable communities,” said Paul Verheul, PPG commercial manager SIGMA COATINGS™ Trade Netherlands, Architectural Coatings. “That’s why it’s crucial to inspire students to choose STEM topics and stress the need to develop professionals with practical and unique knowledge.” PPG sponsored the first prize. The Top Sector Chemistry, a partnership between companies, science and government working on innovation and knowledge sharing, sponsored the second prize, and the Royal Dutch Chemistry Association (VNCI) the third. The tournament includes an annual program of workshops for teachers that ties in with the students’ assignments and cover the latest developments in education. Teachers can also participate without a student team in the competition.
