PPG announced that Dr. Shanti Swarup, PPG associate fellow, research and development, received the 2020 Polymer (POLY) Fellow Award and Division of Polymeric Materials: Science and Engineering (PMSE) Fellow Award from the American Chemical Society (ACS).
Swarup was also recognized by the Pittsburgh Intellectual Property Law Association (PIPLA) as the 2020 Inventor of the Year.
The POLY Fellows Program recognizes excellence in advancing the field of polymer science through scientific accomplishments and service to the profession.
The PMSE Fellowship honors PMSE members who have made significant contributions to the science and engineering of polymeric materials.
In addition, PIPLA recognized Swarup’s achievements in patented polymer technology, which has improved the automotive original equipment manufacturer (OEM) painting process through appearance, performance, productivity and worker safety, as well as reduced energy usage, waste and CO2 emissions.
A number of Swarup’s patented polymers are used by customers in the automotive OEM, refinish, industrial, packaging, adhesive and sealants, photochromic, and mobility industries.
“The POLY Fellow, PMSE Fellow and PIPLA Inventor of the Year Awards recognize PPG’s technology and our world-class organization, with scientists like Shanti, which deliver important contributions to the field of polymer science, and ultimately create valuable products for our customers,” said David Bem, PPG VP and chief technology officer.
During Swarup’s more than 30 years with the company, he has achieved 85 issued U.S. patents and more than 25 pending review. He has maintained active participation in ACS at the local and national level for more than three decades and has served on the Industrial Advisory Board of ACS for 10 years. He also served as director-at-large for the Pittsburgh Society of Coating Technology. In 2018, he was recognized by ACS for his work in applied polymer chemistry.
