Scott Bader - ATC Showcasing Advanced Composite Materials at CAMX Expo

    ...

    09.26.14
Scott Bader-ATC is exhibiting at the new Composites and Advanced Materials Expo (CAMX) taking place from October 13-16 in Orlando, Florida. On its stand (booth no: 2160), Scott Bader-ATC will be showcasing new products and applications using its advanced composite materials, such as fire retardant gelcoats and topcoats, the Crestapol range of high performance acrylic resins including the carbon fiber compatible Crestapol 1250LV infusion grade, and the Crestabond, Crestomer and  Poly-Bond ranges of structural adhesive and bonding pastes.

Visitors to CAMX will get to see the range of specialty fire retardant (FR) unsaturated polyester Crystic resins and Fireguard gelcoats for FRP laminates developed for applications needing parts with very low surface spread of flame, low smoke and low toxic fumes (FST).  For the most demanding mass transportation applications, the range of Crestapol high performance urethane acrylate based acrylic resins is available which provide exceptional FST performance, with grade options for pultrusion and closed mold processing to produce finished parts.  All Crestapol grades available can be heavily ATH filled, offering designers a combination of superior mechanical strength, toughness, outstanding FST and high temperature performance. Crestapol resins are suitable for many building, passenger rail and other land transportation applications.  FRP parts can be molded at room temperature by vacuum infusion or resin transfer molding (RTM), with a good surface finish and minimal print through.  As well as Fireguard FR gelcoats, Crystic Fireguard 75PA Excel, which is a Class 1 intumescent ‘non-flammable’ protective FR topcoat will be promoted, which can withstand a direct flame at a temperature of 700°C for over 60 minutes.

A key growth area in composites is lightweight, high performance carbon fiber parts, especially for automotive and similar applications. Scott Bader-ATC will be featuring the very latest automotive applications which now use Crestapol 1250LV resin to cost effectively vacuum infuse extremely tough, very lightweight body panels parts reinforced with woven fabrics made from glass, carbon and Aramid fibers. Crestapol 1250LV is now specified by several leading specialist fabricators of custom made carbon fiber motorsport body parts.

Launched earlier in 2014, on the Scott Bader-ATC stand will also be the new ‘rapid bond’ Crestabond M1-04 grade, launched earlier in 2014 and developed to significantly increase production efficiencies for high volume parts assembly. With no requirement for a substrate primer and a working time of only 3-4 minutes, assembled parts bonded with Crestabond M1-04 can be moved on to the next stage of production in as little as 8 minutes. According to published test data, Crestabond M1-04 will effectively bond composites, plastics, ABS, aluminum, stainless steel and many other substrates commonly used in industrial applications. This new ‘rapid bond’ Crestabond grade is expected to be of particular interest to automotive OEMs and tier one and tier two suppliers due to its high elongation and toughness, its productivity benefits and its reliable long-term adhesion performance.

All Crestabond adhesives require minimal surface preparation, have excellent fatigue and impact resistance, and can be applied using manual or pneumatic guns with automated dispensing machines.  The combination of a fast cure with an ability to bond such a wide variety of different substrates has provided many manufacturers with significant shop floor advantages, cost savings and productivity benefits. These advantages have been proven in practice by a number of truck, bus and vehicle manufacturers around the world who have now switched to using Crestabond.  Information on the complete range of Crestabond (10:1 and 1:1 ratio) primerless methacrylate adhesives, along with the latest application case studies, will also be available.

The other structural adhesives being promoted during CAMX by Scott Bader-ATC is the urethane acrylate based Crystic Crestomer range, which has Lloyds Acceptance, DNV and RINA approvals, and a proven track record, not only in hull and deck marine applications, but also in demanding building and infrastructure structural bonding applications; Crestomers can be used to bond marine ply, aluminum and stainless steel parts to fiberglass.

Also featured will be the extensive range of POLY-BOND repair, gap filling and general purpose bonding compounds, with grade options suitable for bonding both polyester and vinyl ester fiberglass parts.  The POLY-BOND range has been established in North America for many years, especially in a variety of demanding fiberglass boat building applications. For manufacturing fiber reinforced or sandwich construction parts using a closed mold compression-type process, POLY-BOND B55 and B55LV (low viscosity version) displacement molding compounds (DMC) are offered.  Poly-Bond B55 is a white, low-density polyester based DMC, designed to fill the space within fiber reinforcement layers and cores.

Technical and commercial representatives from Scott Bader-ATC will be available throughout the show for meetings to discuss any application needs and to answer questions.
