BASF recently awarded $10,000 in scholarships to four engineering students at LSU in Baton Rouge, La.. This is the fifth year BASF has provided annual scholarships to students as part of the company’s education outreach and workforce development efforts.
“BASF’s scholarships provide financial support to students pursuing careers in engineering,” said Tom Yura, SVP and GM of BASF's Geismar, La. site. “Through our partnership with LSU’s College of Engineering, BASF promotes career opportunities for students in our industry.”
Each student received a $2,500 scholarship from BASF based on criteria that included maintaining excellent grade-point averages and being active in campus and community organizations.

Scholarship winners:
- Jessica Ashmead is a sophomore mechanical engineering major from Metairie, La. She plans to enhance her education through first-hand experiences working for, and with, professional engineers.
- Jordan Cantrell is a sophomore chemical engineering major from Baton Rouge, La. His overriding goal is to obtain his degree in chemical engineering and make a career in the petrochemical industry.
- Mary Harrel is a sophomore chemical engineering major from Baton Rouge, La. As a chemical engineer, Harrel hopes to be able to help recognize and find solutions for the world’s energy and environmental problems.
- Larry Newby is a junior electrical engineering major from Slidell, La. His goal is to get accepted into the Accelerated Master’s Program at LSU and graduate with a master’s degree. Newby is an intern who also coaches youth soccer.
