The MNYCA on Thursday, Nov. 19 at 2 p.m. will host a webinar on “sustainability" featuring Bryan Danek from Croda and Mike Jeffries from Covestro.
“Sustainability in an Ever-Evolving High-Performance Coatings Industry”
Today’s coatings industry is continuously being challenged to meet an ever-increasing demand for sustainability in its products.
Initiatives such as the United Nations Sustainability Guidelines, Landfill Reduction Guidelines, and regulatory reductions on VOCs are at the forefront in every formulator's mind.
Add to that the challenges of globalization, TSCA and end of life directives, formulators are now being required to not only formulate for performance but also fitting their product into what is now being described as a circular economy.
This presentation will discuss the sustainability challenges formulators face as well as the innovative ways in which raw materials help them play a part in a sustainable circular economy.
Abstract
Sustainability is in our DNA. It is integral to everything we do. From the raw materials we source and the way we use them, to the ingredients we create.
This presentation will discuss how companies view and define sustainability to provide advantages to their markets we serve.
Additionally, we will introduce how market growth is achieved at the intersection of innovation and sustainability.
Manufacturers can supply both 100% bio-based building blocks to modify resins, and 100% bio-based surfactants. Numerous products can be made by using bio-based ethylene oxide (EO) which is manufactured from biomass ethanol.
Coupling the use of bio-based EO with the high proportion of renewable energy used at the manufacturing plant, leads to a significant reduction in carbon footprint for the 100% renewable surfactants.
Formulators can now access 100% renewable surfactants without sacrificing performance to help meet increasingly demanding sustainability targets.
About the presenters
Danek is the North American sales director & global key account director for Croda's Smart Materials business focused on bringing valued innovations, and performance with sustainability to help grow and advance the CASE and Polymer markets space. He holds an MBA and a B.S. in Polymer and Coating Chemistry. Danek has worked on the technical side of the polymer and paint industry followed by 15 years of various commercial roles within the specialty chemical sector ranging from Technical Service specialist, key account manager, Business Development manager, marketing manager, to commercial business leader. He is also Croda’s commercial Sustainability Champion in North America for the Smart Materials business.
Jeffries began his career at Covestro (Mobay at the time) in 1989 working in the Quality Assurance Laboratory. In 1992, he moved into Research. There he worked on the scale-up of the various polyisocyanates, polyisocyanate prepolymers, polyaspartics and polyurethane dispersions into production. In 1998, he specifically began working on the development of new isocyanate resins for use in the coatings industry. Jeffries has been awarded 13 patents and holds a B.S. from the University of Pittsburgh. He is currently a Field Technical Service manager in the Coatings, Adhesives and Specialties Division of Covestro.
