According to Eurostat, the European paint and coating production recovery recorded in May held on in June. In Germany, the index rose to 84 points and again improved only slightly. This represents an increase of +2.8% over the previous month and a decrease of -10 % over the previous year.
In comparison, the EU27 economic area production rose significantly to 93.3 points. This represents an increase of +5.1 % over the previous month yet a decrease of -8.4% over the previous year.
Second-quarter loss in Germany year-over-year was -13.5%.
For the EU27 economic area, second-quarter loss year-over-year was -17.1%.
In the first half of 2020, the production of paints and coatings fell in Germany by -7.5% compared to the previous year (EU27 -9.7%).
The index of German paint and coating production shows a modest improvement. The demand for industrial coatings rose slightly in June (automotive industry resuming production).
Growth in the decorative paint DIY segment slowed down compared to May, yet it remained in the double-digit range. In many European countries, the lifting of strict lockdown continued to have a positive impact in June. France in particular is experiencing sustained growth. There, for example, the DIY retail segment reported a sales surge of +30% in June.
