Borchers: Additives that perform as good in waterborne as in solventborne coatings in regards to color development, transparency and jetness with high jet carbon black pigments for the automotive market which is being driven by the needs of their customers.
Clariant: The trend is going towards more sustainable products with a good price-performance ratio. Clariant recently developed wax additives based on 100% renewable raw materials, which give the wood coatings for floorings, furniture or even plastic coatings imitating the wooden character a protection function combined with smooth hand feeling and slip performance. These effects can be generated with CERIDUST 8090 and CERIDUST 8091. Furthermore, Clariant introduced a new product line called LICOCARE RBW, also based on renewables, offering high performance in coatings & inks applications.
Our new sugar-based neutralizing agent Genamin® Gluco 50 offers a ground-breaking combination of VOC/SVOC-free, label-free, renewable content and multifunctional performance. The novel additive is a dimethylglucamine, derived from glucose. As a result of our breakthrough, manufacturers can develop waterborne paints and lacquers with improved paint lifetime and storage, which have a pleasant smell and are easy to apply – ideal for indoor environments – and satisfy ecolabel criteria.
The amine was developed specifically for use as 3-in-1 neutralizer, compatibilizer and stabilizer ecofriendly, waterborne paints. Genamin Gluco 50 creates an unrivalled opportunity to improve paint characteristics beyond the pH-value and system stabilization of a standard neutralizer and to reduce additive use. It is proven to even outperform alternative multifunctional additives, including AMP in aspects such as storage stability, flash rust, pigment compatibility and odor. Genamin Gluco 50 has no negative influence on paint properties such as gloss or on drying or film hardness.
Further trends include low and stable viscosity of water based intumescent coatings, enhanced shelf life and stable products against low temperatures during storage and transport conditions.
In recent years, coating formulators, mainly for plastic coatings applications in automotive asked for low migratory light stabilizers which can ensure a high persistence and performance in the coated substrate. Tinuvin 249 is a liquid non-basic HALS for coatings. It is designed to meet the high performance and durability requirements of all solvent-based automotive, industrial and decorative coatings where other HALS fail either related to their basicity or for compatibility reasons.
Key performance highlights
Borchers: We offer Borchi Gel PN/NA, a zirconium complex additive that solves many rheology problems with waterborne architectural coatings. Unlike their solvent based counterparts, waterborne architectural coatings rely completely on artificial strategies to develop the proper mix of viscosity, sag control, flow and leveling, application rheology, anti-settling and package stability desired by the formulator for his customers. However, the more common chemistries also have serious flaws which under the right circumstances can affect the previously mentioned properties. Borchi Gel PN/NA can stabilize viscosity loss when tinted with universal colorants, provide improved sag and flow and maintain package stability.
Additional we offer Borchi Gen 0851 to meet the increase in market demand for vibrant colors in waterborne automotive and performance coatings to match those of solvent-borne systems has been observed in the recent years. To meet such demands, unique high molecular weight polyurethane dispersants were engineered to provide the ultimate color development with both organic and high-jetness carbon black pigments in waterborne performance coatings. The electron-rich core of Borchi Gen 0851 with a variety of functional side chains, engineered to be compatible with a wide range of binder systems has demonstrated a clear advantage in pigment surface wetting when compared to a variety of benchmark dispersants. Borchi Gen 0851 through unique polymer engineering allows for enhanced adsorption to the sparsely functional, yet electron-rich surface of difficult to disperse organic pigments such as PR 179 (perylene), PB 15:1 (phthalo cyanine blue) and PBk 7 (high jetness carbon black) pigments. The enhanced pigment-dispersant interactions of these dispersants are clearly evident during the early stages of the grinding process, as evidenced by lower pigment particle size, stronger color development and lower viscosity within the first thirty minutes of grinding.
Clariant: EXOLIT AP 435 is a ground-breaking new halogen-free flame retardant that prolongs the shelf-life of water-based intumescent coatings without affecting fire protection properties. Coatings containing EXOLIT AP 435 have a constant and stable viscosity, even in cold environments and after long storage, offering customers increased flexibility on the construction site. This newly developed ammonium polyphosphate has the same high quality and performance level as Clariant’s well-known Exolit AP 422.
At the European Coatings Show, we also launched our new advanced stabilizers Dispersogen SPS and Dispersogen SPG for use in biocide-free mineral paints that are easy to apply. We have successfully achieved a step change to the current stability performance and rheology profile of silicate and organosilicate paints. Mineral paints based on new Dispersogen SPS/SPG are easier to stir before use and to apply onto a surface with a brush or roller.
Extensive testing in organosilicate paints shows that, compared to the present benchmark two-product stabilizer system, there is less change in viscosity over time and the formulation shows less thickening during storage. Levelling performance remains comparable. The valuable improvement to handling and storage created by Dispersogen SPS and SPG will contribute to further enhancing the appeal of biocide-free paints, particularly as biocide use becomes increasingly regulated and restricted for the coatings industry. Both products are suitable for paints which are certified by an ecolabel such as the German Blue Angel or the Nordic Swan.
Dow Coating Materials: Dow Corning 52 Additive (DC 52) is a performance enhancing silicone additive that allows for customizable slip and improved scratch and abrasion resistance in waterborne paints, inks, and coatings. Ideal for industrial wood coatings, wood trim, inks, overprint varnishes and interior/exterior paints, DC 52 can be used as a partial or full replacement for waxes, resulting in more cost-effective and high impact formulations.
This ultra-high molecular weight silicone dispersion provides improved sandability, enhanced anti- blocking, and good recoatability, all while being smooth to the touch. Adding DC 52 into formulations, even in very small amounts, improves mar resistance and maintains the wax properties without negatively impacting other critical paint properties including surface hardness, water resistance, intercoat adhesion and recoatability.
keim additec: A further development based on our patented MD-micro dispersion technology created the latest Ultralube MDD-48, providing high abrasion resistance and high stability in new aqueous ink formulations.
Lonza: Proxel LS Preservative is easy to formulate and provides increased durability, higher water solubility, and cost-efficiency. Furthermore, it is free of formaldehyde, stable across a wide range of temperatures and pH conditions, and biodegradable in effluent systems. Lastly, Proxel LS Preservative represents a new in-can preservative option which is consistent with trends associated with a significant lowering of
methylisothiazolinone (MIT) levels in preserved product formulations. The product uses two complementary active ingredients - benzisothiazolinone (BIT) and pyrithione, to provide an MIT-free preservative system with enhanced antimicrobial efficacy.
Densil ZOD Antimicrobial represents a new dry-film preservative option which is consistent with trends associated with a significant lowering of carbendazim (BCM) levels in preserved product formulations. This product was designed to provide robust long-term film protection through the pairing of the durable, long-term, slow-leaching, low-water solubility properties of zinc pyrithione with a secondary more water-soluble fungicide and a supplemental algaecide. This product offers complete BCM-free dry-film protection.
Micro Powders: Polyfluo 900 is based on composite particle technology where polyethylene, PTFE, and ultrafine ceramic microspheres are melted, cooled, and precisely micronized. Polyfluo 900 provides a nearly 20% improvement in Taber abrasion compared to our previous best additive for abrasion resistance. Polyfluo 900 also provides maximum burnish resistance in high performance architectural paints and coatings.
Our new PropylTex HD series, launched at the European Coatings Show, is based on our most popular fine and medium grades of PropylTex texturing and structure additives. PropylTex HD grades are manufactured with a composite based on inorganic-densified polypropylene (1.07 g/cc) for improved in-can stability in water based paints and coatings. PropylTex HD is available in 4 mesh sizes (200, 230, 270, 325).
Shamrock Technologies: Shamrock’s latest product, CeraSPERSE 87NS is designed to provide high COF while maintaining high gloss. It is ideal for wet non-skid. This product is perfect for non-skid applications such as interior airplane, aerospace interior walkways and high-end flooring such as automotive showrooms.
The FluoroSPERSE UV 515T is an ideal product used in flexible packaging applications where low odor, low volatility, fast curing, and low migration is desired. FluoroSPERSE UV-515T imports increased hardness, abrasion/scratch resistance, mar/scuff resistance and anti-blocking characteristics. Simple stirring is all that is needed to incorporate this pre-wetted dispersion. The PTFE in this product also contributes to a low COF and a high temperature resistance.
Unimin: Sibelco has developed and commercialized ultrafine, ultra-clear mineral filler additives for UV/EB cure Aqueous and 100% solids wood, industrial, packaging and ink applications. They provide enhanced UV/EB cure efficiency, surface hardness, antiblock and economics at high loadings. Sibelco Unimin has developed lower viscosity natural mineral filler additives for powder coatings based on ATH, barite and nepheline to reduce water spotting, enhance gloss and gloss control.
