Coatings World recently conducted a Q&A interview with a number of additive suppliers to the paint and coatings industry. Click here for Part 1 of the interview. In the second part of the Q&A session, we discuss the latest product launches and their performance attributes.
CW: Please provide a description of up to two new additives (what are their key benefits, attributes, etc.)?
Arkema: CRAYVALLAC® LV is a third-generation polyamide rheology modifier with easy activation and high performance in solvent-free systems. It is designed for use in solvent-free epoxy and polyurethane coatings for marine, protective and general industrial applications, as well as industrial wood coatings. It exhibits easier activation and higher performance when compared to previous generation polyamide rheology modifiers. Formulation benefits include excellent sag resistance and very good shear thinning for spray application of coatings.
CRAYVALLAC® OPTIMA is a third-generation polyamide rheology modifier with wider activation window in high solids epoxies. It is primarily used in hot spray applications in marine, protective and general industrial applications where good sag during application or onto hot substrates is needed. It exhibits a wider activation window than second-generation polyamide rheology modifiers, good hot spray application tolerance, excellent intercoat adhesion resistance and high sag resistance.
BASF: Efka® FA 4611 – a solvent-free dispersing agent with excellent stabilization of inorganic pigments, particularly titanium dioxide, in 100% systems, solvent-based coatings, and printing inks.
Key benefits:
Coatex: As industrial coatings are rapidly transitioning to water-based systems, our new Coapur™ XS 83, highly pseudoplastic HEUR thickener has been specially developed to fulfill the requirements of industrial applications using airless or conventional spray systems with excellent film properties, anticorrosion resistance, sag resistance and storage stability. It is efficient in a wide range of binders commonly used in industrial wood finished, protective, marine paints and automotive industry.
On the dispersing agents side, one of our key focus is the optimization of TiO2 efficiency and dispersion. Our Coadis™ 144 A has been specially designed for paints and coatings. It is the perfect cost-effective tool to address the current TiO2 challenges.
Pilot: Masurf® FS-3335A is a water-soluble, anionic fluorosurfactant that gives low aqueous surface tensions with minimal foaming. Masurf® FS-3335A offers excellent wetting, leveling, anti-block and dirt pick up resistance. Masurf® FS-3335A can be used in a variety of applications including architectural coatings, industrial finishes, floor care formulations, and wood coatings.
Masurf® FS-3330A is a 30% active C6-based ammonium fluoroaliphatic phosphate ester in an aqueous solution. Masurf® FS-3330A imparts protective oil and grease resistance to wood, concrete, stone and tile surfaces used as building materials, including kitchens, flooring and bathrooms. Masurf® FS-3330A adds unique surfactant, conditioning, wetting, lubricity and oil/sebum resistance properties.
Siltech: Our latest Silmer OHT derivatives give reaction into condensation cured polymers and can provide slip, mar and stain resistance properties which are often similar to Fluoroalkyl based additives.
Unimin: Minex EP-315 – Lower gloss, higher flow and coverage plus abrasion resistance in powder and industrial topcoats. Minex 12- High clarity and abrasion resistance in clear wood stains and UV coatings

Key benefits:
- Works well with high pigment and filler loadings;
- Strong reduction of mill-base viscosity;
- Broadly compatible in a wide range of resin systems (UV-acrylic, PUR, UPE, epoxy);
- Suitable for high gloss systems
