When people select the colors for the interiors and exteriors of their homes, there is a lot of factors that go into the decisions they make. Often, there is a sense of the times involved, as people react to the world around them, whether it is seeking a sense of calm or breaking out.
Recently, Dunn-Edwards Corporation introduced its 2024 Color + Design Trends. These trends include 48 hues across four color palettes: New Dawn, Time of Comfort, View to Wonder and Cinematic Heritage. These hues are part of Dunn-Edwards Perfect Palette.
Sara McLean, color expert + stylist at Dunn-Edwards, said that this year’s trends show a design world where people are looking to break free, leading to endless possibilities.
“For 2024, we’re seeing the promise of a new era reflected in interior design – being set free from temporal, geographic, stylistic, and technological boundaries to escape into new, colorful worlds of peoples’ own creation,” McLean observed. “We drew inspiration from pop culture, art, music, fashion, and more and curated palettes that exude confidence and positivity. It's not just about colors; it's about the cozy, romantic, and adventurous feelings they evoke. It's like an open invitation to step into a future where the sky's the limit and possibilities are endless.”
Selections over the past few years have been impacted by the pandemic, and McLean and her team see the world as ready to break free.
“The pandemic changed how everyone saw the world - now, we're living and connecting in a whole new way,” McLean observed. “The Dunn-Edwards 2023 Color + Design Trends showcase this evolution by exploring emerging palettes and design styles that reflect the outcome of a changing reality.
“Coming out of 2022, we were working towards rebuilding,” McLean continued. “We leaned on a flood of creative expressions that provide escape, connection, comfort, and survival — all at once — that inspired people to design new spaces that reintroduce joy, optimism, and nature into our everyday lives. That's why in 2024 trends, we are really moving forward and away from this idea and into ideas of regenerative spirit and optimistic attitudes.”
For 2024, McLean and her team have identified four particular color trends.
“Each palette brings a unique energy to any space it may be incorporated into, but the unifying factor of all four palettes — all invite coziness, romance, escapism, and youthfulness into our lives and inspire us to break the mold and transform our spaces in a meaningful way,” she added.
“New Dawn is all about finding tranquility in the midst of our hyper-connected, fast-paced world. The colors are soft and earthy, creating spaces where you can have a quiet moment. The decor is clean and minimal, yet a touch of nature's asymmetry adds this sense of peaceful balance.
“Time of Comfort is like a warm hug from the past. It's all about holding onto that feeling of coziness and nostalgia. You'll see classic florals, soothing neutrals, and those familiar patterns like stripes and gingham. Whether bringing the countryside to the city or simply surrounding yourself with things that feel like home, this trend is all about comfort.
“View to Wonder is like a journey into the future. We're pushing the boundaries with bold, bright colors that contrast against deep shadows. It's like cosmic glam meets futuristic chic. Think outer space mixed with a touch of sci-fi inspiration – it's definitely out of this world.
“Cinematic Heritage is all about turning everyday moments into epic stories. It's like capturing life's minuscule details and turning them into something worth remembering. We're styling our spaces like scenes from a movie, creating a whole narrative. But it's not just about looks; it's about cherishing the history and moments that have shaped us.”
The selection of trends is not a random one. Dunn-Edwards’ Color + Design team sifts through cultural, artistic and societal trends to see what people are seeking.
“At Dunn-Edwards, we determine the Color + Design Trends by immersing ourselves in emerging moments across fashion, technology, art, and pop culture to pinpoint key design themes and color stories reflecting the coming year, alongside demographic and socioeconomic shifts, global events, luxury trends in travel and food, as well as health and wellness trends,” McLean said. “This year, we dug deep to uncover the big themes pushing aesthetics forward in 2024 while capturing what's happening in the world and bringing it to life through color.”
Selecting these colors and trends is also a continuous process.
“We’re always keeping a pulse on the latest trends and evolutions in color, and these influences help inform which colors are most representative of the near future,” McLean added. “After we announce Color + Design Trends for the upcoming year, we announce the upcoming year’s Color of the Year - and the cycle of seeking inspiration continues!”
