    CHINACOAT2014 Preview

Now in its 19th year, this annual event offers visitors a full range of exhibits for the paint and coatings industry.

    Kerry Pianoforte, Editor 10.20.14
CHINACOAT (The China International Exhibition for Coatings, Printing Inks and Adhesives), the premier event for the paint and coatings market in China, alternates annually between Guangzhou and Shanghai. According to CHINACOAT’s organizers, Sinostar International Ltd., in 2013, the coatings output of China reached 13.03 million tons, with a year-on-year increase of 3.58 percent, accounting for more than 40 percent of the total worldwide production. It is estimated that the growth rate will be approximately five to eight percent in the next three to five years.

CHINACOAT2014 will be held December 3-5 at the China Import and Export Fair Complex in Guangzhou. This annual event offers attendees the opportunity to learn about the latest products and technologies, as well as an opportunity to network face-to-face with key industry personnel.

CHINACOAT2014 currently has a total of 898 direct exhibitors, comprised of 675 from China, 45 from Hong Kong and Taiwan regions and 178 from overseas, representing 26 different countries. Overall, 974 companies will be represented. This year’s event attracted 183 new exhibitors, comprised of 149 from China, five from Hong Kong and Taiwan regions and 29 from overseas.

CHINACOAT2014 Guangzhou will have six exhibit zones:  Zone 1 (Halls 9.2, 10.2 & 11.2): International Raw Materials; Zone 2 (Hall 11.2): International Machinery, Instrument & Services; Zone 3 (Halls 11.2, 9.3, 10.3 & 11.3): China Raw Materials; Zone 4 (Hall 11.2): Powder Coatings Technology; Zone 5 (Hall 11.2): UV/EB Technology & Products and Zone 6 (Hall 11.2): China Machinery, Instrument and Services.

CHINACOAT will also include the following educational programs: CHINACOAT Conference: “Smart, Eco-Friendly & Functional Coatings Additives;” Technical Workshops on Formulation and Application of Functional Coatings and Inks and Sustainable, Green & Bio-Based Printing Inks; New-Tech Corner and more than 30 sessions of Technical Seminars.

    12th CHINACOAT Conference
The 12th CHINACOAT Conference will be held December 1-2, 2014 at the Shangri-la Hotel Guangzhou. The theme of this year’s conference is “Smart, Eco-Friendly and Functional Coatings Additives.”

Additives are important performance-enhancing ingredients essential for all coatings. As technology continues evolving toward environmentally friendly systems, a series of new generation smart additives has emerged. These new low-polluting systems not only achieve the performance levels of the replacing products, but also offer significant improvement. Today, quality products cannot be made without the use of functional additives. With an estimated turnover of $6.5 billion, coatings additives play a major role by imparting cost/performance package.

This Conference will be of interest to executives and technical staff, and should help all involved in product development, formulation, production or planning to move forward with the needs and demands of the industry and environment.

Presentation of papers and post-presentation discussions will be conducted in both English and Chinese (Putonghua).

The conference will commence with a keynote paper presented by Prof. Jamil Baghdachi of the Coatings Research Institute, Eastern Michigan University, U.S. on Monday, December 1 at 1:45 pm. Prof. Baghdachi will present “Science and Technology of Smart and Functional Additives.”

According to Baghdachi, smart polymers and coatings are widely used in global industries. Some multi-functional materials not only respond to external stimulus, but also render novel functions in addition to traditional properties. Smart and functional additives are one of the necessary ingredients of such coatings. Additives that respond to pH changes, some nanomaterials, color changing, polarity switching and antimicrobial agents are among these materials. This paper will discuss the science and technology of smart and multifunctional materials, the present pathways and examples of such products. Current global R&D trends will also be highlighted.
Papers to be delivered after the keynote presentation on Monday include:  “A Smart Technology to Avoid Blistering of Low PVC Wall Coating” presented by Wernfried Heilen, vice president of technical marketing, Evonik Industries AG, Germany; “Novel Short-Chain Fluorosurfactants for Water-Based Industrial Coatings” presented by Charlene Guo, technical services specialist – AP region, DuPont, U.S. and “Next Generation High Efficient Matting Agents for UV Coatings” presented by Khoo Teng Hai, technical product manager, Lubrizol Advanced Materials, Performance Coatings, Asia Pacific.

The second day of the conference will begin at 9:00 am with a keynote paper , “Modern Additive Technology – a View into the Future” presented by Dr. Guillaume Jaunky, technical director research and development at BYK Chemie, Germany. This paper will update sophisticated additive technologies including examples of industrial applications. Future perspectives bridging the gap between theory and applied science will also be discussed.

The rest of the presentations include: “New Superwetting Surfactants for Coatings Applications” presented by Dr. Dai Ye, senior principal chemist at Air Products, U.S.; “The Role of Thickeners in Optimizing Coatings Formulation” presented by Dr. Clemens Auschra, group leader research, BASF, Germany; “Developments in Dry Film Biocides” presented by Kevin Roden, regional technical manager – Asia Pacific, Thor Group, Australia; “New High Performance Grinding Medium, for Industrial Coatings Colorants” presented by Johnny Zhang, technical development manager Asia-Pacific, Allnex, Belgium and “Multi-functional Thermochromic Polymeric Shape Memory Composites” presented by Prof. Long Lin, head of the department of Color and Polymer Chemistry, University of Leeds, UK and Prof. Haibao and Dr. Yongrao Yao from the National Key Laboratory of Science and Technology on Advanced Composites in Special Environments, Harbin Institute of Technology, China.

    Technical Workshops
To provide opportunities for training and learning for industry professionals, two Technical Workshops will be held concurrently with the main exhibition December 3-4. The Workshops will be delivered in an interactive style and there will be opportunities for delegates to discuss their technical problems with the tutor.

    • Workshop I: “Formulation and Application of Functional Coatings and Inks” will be held December 3 at 1:30 pm and will be run by Prof. Long Lin, head of the Department of Color and Science at the University of Leeds, UK. Lin’s research expertise covers coatings and inks, coating and printing, thermochromism, photochromism, organic dyes and pigments, security printing, functional coatings and inks, biosensors, polymeric materials, statistical experimental design and data analysis, computer-aided process modeling and computer-aided formulation optimization.

The workshop will provide an introduction to functional coatings and inks and underpinning principles involved in the development of such coatings and inks formulations.

    • Workshop II: “Sustainable, Green and Bio-based Printing Inks” will be held December 4 at 9:30 am and will be led by Jack Baarends, an industry expert with  44 years of experience in the fields of formulation of polymers (resins), varnishes, compounds and other raw materials, as well as the end-use sides of the ink and printing industry. Having spent the majority of his career as an R&D director as well as commercial director in various international companies such as AzkoNobel and Lawter International, Barrends has developed in-depth knowledge on formulating, developing and testing of printing inks, with emphasis on end-user application as well as meeting high performance requirements.

This Workshop will provide an introduction to “green” (versus marketing) and the guidelines to use more bio-renewable raw materials, to use less or no toxic raw materials and to improve the environmental aspects (de-inking, recycling and biodegradability) of printing inks. Guidance for ink formulations for flexo, gravure and offset inks will also be provided. It will show that “Sustainable (green)” inks are no longer just a buzzword, but an achievable practice in the real world.
