From Nov. 28-30 the Guangzhou Int'l Convention & Exhibition Center will host CHINACOAT2012, the main attraction for raw material and equipment suppliers looking to capitalize on China’s growing paint and coatings industry.

    Tim Wright, Editor10.10.12
China is the world’s largest paint and coatings market. The reforms China implemented over the past two decades have energized not only the competitiveness of domestic suppliers, but also the quality of their products.

For the past 17 years, CHINACOAT has provided an ideal platform for industry professionals to engage, interact and explore the growing market and discover insights into the diverse opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.

CHINACOAT2012 will take place from November 28-30 in the Guangzhou Int’l Convention and Exhibition Center (Pazhou Complex) in halls 9.2, 10.2, 11.2, 12.2, 10.3 and 11.3. It is a “must-visit” event offering an annual hub to industry players to learn the latest products and technologies as well as to find opportunities through face-to-face networking.

As this issue went to press, a total of 897 exhibitors from 29 countries/regions were booked to showcase their products and services in an exhibit area of more than 57,000 square meters.
The largest exhibiting group is from China. The more than 600 Chinese suppliers will provide international visitors with a convenient platform to source Chinese products at competitive prices.

The exhibition also offers visitors the opportunity to purchase a wide range of products and services that are available from a variety of international companies.

There are six exhibit zones featuring international and China raw materials, machinery and instrumentation, powder coatings technology and rad-tech products, which is a new exhibit zone this year. The scope of exhibits cover resins and binders, pigments and extenders, additives and solvents, production equipment, powder and UV-cure coating technology, QC instrumentation, and the latest in safety and environmental management systems.

In line with CHINACOAT’s visitor-oriented approach, show organizer Sinostar International Ltd. each year strives to introduce more educational elements to the show’s platform to enable visitors to gain the insightful knowledge and effective solutions to cope with future challenges. A series of technical programs will be arranged concurrently, including the 10th CHINACOAT Conference, Technical Workshops, New-Tech Corner and more than 30 Technical Seminars. Specialists and experts from around the world will give visitors comprehensive analysis on market development and technology updates.

    CHINACOAT Conference

The 10th CHINACOAT Conference will be held at the Ramada Plaza Guangzhou two days prior to the opening of the exhibition from November 26-27, 2012. The theme of the conference is: High Grade Coatings—High Solids • High Build • High Tech.

With the maturing of the paint market in China, specialization in high value-added products has emerged as the key to profitability. Commercial success no longer hinges on volume or turnover but on high performance. At the same time, environmental considerations are exerting additional pressure on product development. Most high performance coating systems have their own drawbacks, requiring specific technical solutions, often based on complex and clever chemistry, for a problem-free application.

Much of the current R&D work thus focuses on the creation of high performance products and technologies leading to high productivity at the shop floor and high differentiation in the market place through the development of value added features and functionalities based on innovative chemistry. Rising labor and application costs, moreover, make long lasting high-durability coatings particularly attractive since it helps delaying the maintenance interval thereby saving cost.

The topic of high-grade coatings is also important in the face of mounting competition and the pressure on commoditization. A high quality coating is the key for high differentiation and high growth.

The presentation of papers and post-presentation discussions will be conducted in both English and Chinese (Putonghua).

The first keynote will be delivered by Prof. Jamil Baghdachi, Coatings Research Institute, Eastern Michigan University, U.S., on Monday, Nov. 26 at 10:00 a.m. Prof. Baghdachi will present, “High Grade Coatings: Technology Update.” He says the two driving forces of nanotechnology and smart coatings in the past two decades have fueled vigorous research and development work on polymeric coatings. The result of such movement has been the development of high performance and high valued coating materials. These coatings not only function as protective and decorative materials, they also push the performance envelop well beyond traditional definition of coatings. Included in this class of new developments are high temperature resistant polymeric coatings, stimuli responsive, super high solids liquid coatings, self-stratifying, superhydrophobic/superhydrophilic, and biologically active and corrosion sensing coatings. This paper provides a brief discussion of technology, properties and application of these high performance and high valued coatings.

The second keynote will be delivered by Prof. Wengang Shi, University of Science and Technology of China and RadTech China, also on Monday Nov. 26 following the first keynote at 11:15 a.m. Prof. Shi will present, “Progress in Radiation Curing Technology and China Market Overview.” Prof. Shi will briefly introduce the basic concept of energy curing technology and its latest progress of applications in various industrial sectors. The China markets based on the survey of around 130 leading suppliers of UV raw materials, formulations including coatings, inks and adhesives, and UV lamp and irradiation equipment since 2007 will be summarized in detail in comparison of the global geographic regional markets and industrial application segments. The predictions for the growth in applications in China will be also discussed.

Papers to be delivered following the two keynotes include: “Novel Wetting & Dispersing Additives for High Solids Coatings,” Wernfried Heilen, Evonik Tego Chemie, Germany; “Tailor-made Nano-Hybrid Particles for Functional Coatings,” Michael Berkei, BYK, Germany; “Synergy Effect of Fluorine Containing Polymers for High Performance Coatings,” Patrick Zhao, Beijing Sino-Rich Material Science, China; and “Epoxy Functional Rubber Technology for Super Tough Coatings,” Hans Ridderikhoff, Croda Europe, The Netherlands.

Papers to be delivered on Tuesday Nov. 27 include: “Formulation and Properties Analysis of Transparent Thermal Insulation Nano-scale Coatings for Building Glass,” Glenn Hu, South China University of Technology, China; “Structured Nano-Acrylic Polymers: Towards Low VOC Paints with Excellent Block Resistance, Hardness & Film Formation,” Wenjun Wu, Arkema Coating Resins, USA; “Multi-Functional Pigments for High Performance Industrial Coatings,” Lars Kirmaier, Heubach, Germany; “Solvent Free UV Hardcoat for Spray Application,” Mouhcine Kanouni, Cytec Industries, USA; “Improved Effects in Pigment Dispersion by Coating Additives with Advanced Polymer Architecture,” Ralf Knischka, BASF SE, Ludwigshafen, Germany; “Novel Application of Fluorosurfactants in Easy-Clean Architectural Paints,” Charlene Guo, DuPont China R&D Center, USA; and “Thickening of Waterborne Systems: Why Hydrophobically Modified Polymers (HM-P),” Leif Karlson, Akzo Nobel Functional Chemicals, Sweden.

    • Color Measurement: Beyond Computer; and
    • Bio-Based Coatings Technology.

CHINACOAT’s New Tech Corner will be held in Hall 11.2, Meeting Zone 11.2M25-34.

No admission fees are required. All visitors are welcome to attend.

For Theme 1: Coatings for iPad, Mobile & Laptop, Wang Hailong, manager of R&D department for UV Division, Jiangsu Sanmu Group Company, will deliver, “UV Coatings For 3C Products.” In the 3C electronic products (computer, communication and consumer electronics) market, the use of UV coatings has increased significantly over the last decade. Main reason for this growth is the excellent performance that can be achieved with UV coatings, especially very good wear resistance, outdoor durability and resistance against household chemicals and fat for the plastic parts. With an ever increasing demand for high performance and longer lasting parts, combined with the global occurring shift to more environmentally friendly coating technology, UV coatings will have a bright future in 3C electronics as the best technology to deliver this combination.

Theme 2: Sustainable Coatings Technology will be covered by Magdalena Bodi, wood coating end use, BYK Solutions (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. She will deliver, “Additive Recommendations for Waterborne Wood Coatings.” The future technologies in wood coatings are: 100% UV and Water Borne. Waterborne coatings have been gaining importance and market share particularly in Europe and North America before. In China, government and general public’s concern for environment has also significantly increased. More and more wood coating producers have started to implement waterborne coatings. With improved technology, these products are not just environmental friendly, but also better performing than before. This presentation gives a summary about application of additives in Waterborne Wood Coatings.

Theme 3: Opaque Polymers: Partial Replacement of TiO2 will be discussed by Dr. Wenjun Wu, principal scientist, Arkema (China) Investment Co., Ltd. She will deliver, “Advanced Opacifier & Dispersant Technologies: Strategies to Improve Hiding & Reduce TiO2 Usage.” Recent shortages in titanium dioxide and resulting price increases have provided a renewed incentive for formulators to look for alternatives to this key raw material to promote paint hiding. Recently there are new technology in the form of Opacifiers and novel titanium efficiency enhancing dispersants that can be used for this purpose. The presentation will focus on the properties of these new technologies and how combining these technologies in a paint formulation can significantly reduce the amount of titanium required in a coatings formulation.

Theme 4: Color Measurement: Beyond Computer will feature two speakers, Luwis Liu, application engineer, X-Rite Asia Pacific Limited, and Holly Ling, application manager, Datacolor Trading (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. Mr. Liu will deliver, “Innovation Wet Paint Color Management.” Color is a defining element in coatings. Many common approaches like visual assessment and estimate in combination with color measurement technology have brought accuracy and consistency to coatings color management process. As coatings technologies progress, color measurement for wet samples, special effective colors and more effectively and timely control of color on production floor all call for new innovative color management solutions will be presented in this presentation.

Ms. Ling will deliver, “Color & Appearance Supply Chain Management.” To ensure the final products’ color accuracy, the specifiers need to manage suppliers, materials and processes across complex supply chains and workflows. With continuous advancements in color measurement technology to improve precision and range of use can improve quality and reduce costs. Using instruments with good inter-instrument agreement can use same analyzer for all product series that used in paint manufacturer and retail shop. Match pigment featured with latest technology of colorant K&S calibration can ensure accurate formulation for all kind of coating applications, e.g. different sample gloss, hiding calculation for different film thickness, etc.
Theme 5: Bio-Based Coatings Technology will feature three speakers: Angeline Ding Woan, technical marketing manager, Ashland Specialty Ingredients; Paul Cameron, research and technology manager, Croda; and Erwin Honcoop, technical marketing specialist, Purac Biochem BV.

Ms. Woan will deliver, “Biocides in Coatings: Sustain Release Technology.” The addition of a dry film biocide to coating is necessary to prevent the paint film from microbial defacement. Biocides migrate to the film surface to exert biocidal effect. This renders the biocides susceptible to water leaching as well as to degradation by UV/heat. Sustain release technology through encapsulation into an inorganic carrier has been developed to enhance leach resistance of various actives substances. This results in a longer coating shelf life given the same initial biocide concentration as well as a more environmentally friendly profile.

Mr. Cameron will deliver, “Speciality Fatty Biobased Monomers for Coatings.” Dimer fatty acids have been used for many years to bring high performance to materials such as epoxy coatings and hotmelt polyamide adhesives. There are recently developed many new grades of related biobased monomers. These bring a number of special properties including better color, UV/heat/color stability and controlled functionality, in conjunction with other long established benefits such as hydrolytic stability, adhesion and flexibility. The technology can also bring low viscosity, enabling low VOC, and can be used in many types of coating, including polyurethane dispersion, radcure, epoxy and saturated polyester.

Mr. Honcoop will deliver, “Improved Polyester Coatings with Lactide as Biobased Building Block.” Polyester resins have been used for many years to produce high performance materials such as solvent-based coatings. In the course of time the systems have changed towards reduced VOC products. The next challenge in the industry is to improve the carbon footprint of coating systems. Possibilities for CO2 reductions can be found in the use of materials from renewable resource. Lactide has been developed as a sustainable product, which can be used as chemical building block to build polyester resins. Lactide has a low carbon footprint, which provides a way to achieve CO2 reduction. Incorporated in polyester resins the new building block gives a lower resin viscosity without compromising the coating performance. Additionally the derived polyester coatings show enhanced hardness whilst maintaining flexibility.
