New rheology modifiers from Dow Coating Materials, a business unit of The Dow Chemical Company, can improve surface aesthetics and hiding across a broad range of binder chemistries. Introduced at American Coatings SHOW and CONFERENCE 2016, ACRYSOL RM-1600 and ACRYSOL RM-3030 Rheology Modifiers will both join the business’ growing portfolio of additives offering the ongoing demand of flexibility formulators need to create robust paints with optimized performance attributes across multiple paint lines.
“These versatile rheology modifiers can help our customers solve the challenge of delivering high shear thickness while still providing formulation flexibility,” said Carmen Rodriguez, North America Additives marketing manager, Dow Coating Materials. “These Newtonian thickeners allow formulators to work within a wide range of formulation requirements, including the level of rheology modifier demand, to deliver a product that stands out from competitive offerings.”
Low-VOC, solvent1- and surfactant2-free ACRYSOL RM-1600 and ACRYSOL RM-3030 Rheology Modifiers are hydrophobically-modified ethylene oxide-based urethane (HEUR) chemistries that offer good film build with excellent flow and leveling behavior. These high-efficiency ICI builders can be used in formulations with high or low rheology modifier demand and still deliver improved surface smoothness and applied hiding.
“Additives offer the power to transform a can of paint to deliver desirable performance properties across paint lines and binder types,” said Tara Conley, North America technical sales manager, Dow Coating Materials. “These novel technologies enable enough flexibility and compatibility to tailor formulations to meet specific performance targets.”
ACRYSOL RM-1600 Rheology Modifier is a new Newtonian HEUR ICI builder that improves film build and smoothness, especially in high solids and small particle and composite forming binder formulations. Common applications for these complex formulations include high gloss trim paints, highly toned deep base paints and accent paints. ACRYSOL™ RM-1600 Rheology Modifier decouples high-shear viscosity from mid-shear Krebb Units (KU) contribution for formulation stability and reduced viscosity drop upon tinting for tailored rheology and paint differentiation.
ACRYSOL RM-3030 Rheology Modifier also offers good film build and excellent flow and leveling. This ICI builder allows for reduced thickener use without compromising stability, and higher ICI efficiency with minimal KU contribution for improved cost-in-use. Its broad utility facilitates optimized rheology to easily upgrade performance across paint lines and bindery types.
