This month we are excited to offer our readers a special ABRAFATI Supplement. For those not familiar with this event, ABRAFATI is the largest coatings industry event in Latin America. This special section is focused on the Brazil paint and coatings market and all articles within are printed in both English and Portuguese. In addition to articles covering the Brazil market for coatings and ink, we are also featuring a show guide with information on exhibitors and a floor plan.
According to the show’s organizers, “ABRAFATI is recognized as one of the most important events for the paint and coatings industry worldwide and will bring together leading companies and thousands of professionals interested in gaining knowledge and making deals, having positive effects on the industry over time in terms of both business and technological evolution.”
The main focus for this 15th edition of the trade show is on ways of adding value to coatings, which will be highlighted at the booths as well as the presentations to be made at the Congress.
Here is a quick look at the Brazil Paint and Coatings Market:
• Total size of the Brazilian Paint and Coatings Segment is 1.5 billion liters and $3.4 billion U.S. dollars.
• Decorative or architectural coatings are 85% of the volume and 69% of the value.
• The next biggest segment would be automotive coatings (both OEM and refinish). Automotive coatings are 5.9% of the volume and 13% of the value.
• The remaining 12% of the value and 9.1% of the volume and 18% of the value is comprised of a variety of Industrial coatings segments including Industrial Maintenance & Protective Coatings, Powder, General Industrial, and packaging coatings.
• The key players in the market are the large multinationals; In the decorative coatings market, this includes BASF, AkzoNobel, and Sherwin-Williams. For automotive coatings it is Axalta, PPG, and
BASF for auto OEM.

For refinish coatings, it would include those three companies + AkzoNobel, Sherwin-Williams and a variety of local suppliers. In the remaining industrial coatings market, each of those companies would be playing a role as well as some local Brazilian paint companies like Renner, Weg, Farben Industria Quimica, and Maza Productos Quimicos.
