As is the case for almost all market segments in the paint and coatings industry, COVID-19 continued to have a huge impact on wood coatings. In this month’s feature on Wood coatings, manufacturers talked about the impact – both negative and positive – the pandemic had on their business.
All the coatings manufacturers we interviewed for this article noted that the lock down and increased time at home drove the number of DIY projects and the demand for wood coatings and stains. On the negative side, logistics and raw material shortages were named as some of the top concerns.
“Overall, the coatings industry has been significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic these past two years,” said Mark Ferrauiolo, associate product marketing manager, Benjamin Moore. ”From raw material shortages to logistical challenges, the market has had to adjust its planning and processes to continue service with limited products available. Wood finishers have had to use new products as alternatives to what they would normally use, many times sacrificing key attributes like dry times and
color availability.”
Here is a look at some key happenings in the wood coatings market:*˚• March 2021, AkzoNobel completes the acquisition of INDUSTRIAS TITAN, S.A.U. (Titan Paints), which also produces products for wood applications.
• March 2021, Axalta Coating Systems launches Imron Industrial 2100 HG-C polyurethane high-gloss clear coat for wood and other application, which offers quick melt and smooth flow such that damaged areas can be repaired easily.
• June 2021, PPG Industries, Inc. completes its acquisition of Tikkurila, a producer and distributor of industrial wood and protective coatings.
• October 2020, AkzoNovel launches 100% UV cured wood exterior coatings under the brand name RUBBOL through Sikkens Wood Coatings product range, which will save production time and energy costs.
• September 2020, AkzoNobel completes the acquisition of Stahl Performance Powder Coatings and its range of products for heat-sensitive substrates such as medium-density fiberboard (MDF), plywood and
others substrates.
• June 2020, Axalta Coating Systems launches new polyurethane wood coating products, which are made to protect and enhance the aesthetics of wood surfaces, thereby enhanced the company’s polyurethane wood coatings business.
