AkzoNobel announced that it has acquired the entire BluCure Cobalt-free patent and trademark portfolio from DSM Resins and Functional Materials. With full ownership of the patent portfolio, the licensing of the combined BluCure technologies by AkzoNobel has become easier, enabling a faster adoption in the unsaturated polyester composite industry.
BluCure is an umbrella brand of resin curing technologies and products launched jointly by AkzoNobel and DSM in 2012 as a sustainable alternative for Cobalt-based systems which are under pressure for potential reclassification.
“This completion of our patent portfolio is another example of AkzoNobel’s commitment to expanding our product portfolio to provide essential ingredients in a sustainable way to help our customers make people’s lives more livable and inspiring,” said Markus Majoor, AkzoNobel Global Market Segment Leader for Thermoset Chemicals.
“We are pleased to acquire the remaining BluCure Cobalt-free patent portfolio positions from DSM,” says Markus Majoor. “This will enable us to license the combined technology in an unconstrained and transparent way to the entire composite Industry.
AkzoNobel is leading the way with a range of breakthrough, Cobalt-free accelerators for the curing of unsaturated polyester and vinyl ester resins that can be used as alternatives for conventional Cobalt-based accelerators.
“We expect these new accelerator technologies to play a key role in the curing of future generation styrene-free resins,” added Majoor.
