Dura Industries and Valspar teamed up to create and coat the Smithsonian National Museum of African-American History and Culture’s façade.
For the first time in company history, Dura said it implemented a hand-painted five-coat system.
Dura's production team hand-coated 3,600 metal wall panels in order to achieve the desired shade: a copper hue.
The panels were painted with the five-coat system, described by Dura as: two layers of primer and three of the coating.
The base color, African Sunrise, was selected by the Smithsonian design team.
Valspar provided multiple custom colors of its Fluropon® exterior architectural coating. That was then mixed in to become part of what Dura dubbed the Artisan 3.5 coating.
The five-coat system was necessary to create an even appearance on the rough surface of the sand-casted aluminum metal wall panels, according to Dura, which said it blends 70 percent of its coatings in-house.
The museum is located at 1400 Constitution Ave. NW, Washington, D.C. 20560.
