On February 22-24, 2023, W. R. Grace & Co. participated in CHINACOAT 2022 in Guangzhou. With the theme “Green Industrial Coatings Solutions,” Grace presented five series of innovative high-performance solutions with eco-friendly properties including SHIELDEX® Anti-Corrosion Pigments, SYLOID® Silica Matting Agents, LUDOX® Colloidal Silica, SYLOWHITE™ Titanium Dioxide Extender and SYLOSIV® Moisture Scavenger.
As one of the most well-known trade shows in China, CHINACOAT attracted more than 600 exhibitors and many visitors this year.

With the growing market demand for sustainable products, green industrial coatings have become one of the major trends in the industry.
During the trade show, Grace and PCI Magazine jointly held a roundtable conference on the topic of “Policy and industry changes from mandatory standards for industrial protective coatings to remove heavy metals”. The conference was organized by the media and featured five participants from well-known upstream and downstream companies in the coatings industry. As a global leader in specialty chemicals, Grace was invited to share its perspective on this critical topic. Two years after the implementation of heavy metal restriction regulations for industrial protective coatings, the commercially available technical solutions for metal protective coatings are facing different challenges. Grace actively engages with industry partners to provide eco-friendly and high-performance solutions to customers and the market.

“Grace is dedicated to providing customized high-performance products and service to meet customers’ demands. Grace Shanghai Technical Service Laboratory plays a very important role as Grace’s technical center in China. With very close partnerships with customers, we often collaborate with them to develop customized products to meet their requirements for specific formulations. Grace has always been committed to technological innovation to provide solutions for our customers,” explained Weide Zhang, Technical Customer Service Manager, China, Materials Technologies. Grace.
Based on China’s 14th Five-Year Plan and 2035 Vision Goals, national environmental regulations for the coatings industry are becoming increasingly stringent. As defined in the national standard GB 30981-2020 promulgated in 2020, the content of hexavalent chromium (Cr6+) in industrial protective coatings should not exceed 1000mg/kg. Moreover, the national standard GB/T 40493-2021, promulgated in August 2021, further defines the method of for determination of heavy metals. The national standard has come into force since March 2022.
As a positive response to this policy, Grace has accelerated the development of green industrial coatings. SHIELDEX® Anti-Corrosion Pigments can be applied in household appliances, indoor and outdoor metal structures, and a variety of construction machinery. The products are ideal substitutes for products containing toxic heavy metals. In 2021, Grace introduced SHIELDEX® C500 silica. The product not only provides excellent corrosion resistance to metal primers, but also meets a range of environmental standards as it is not classified as toxic and contains only technically unavoidable traces of heavy metals originating from raw materials. Grace won the Ringier Innovation Awards in both 2021 and 2022 for SYLOID® AQ Matting Agents and SHIELDEX® Anti-Corrosive Pigments respectively.
The coatings industry in China is transitioning to more eco-friendly coatings systems. In addition to the trend of heavy metal restrictions, the demand of waterborne and UV-based coatings continues to increase. To meet these demands, Grace presented two series of high-performance matting agents: SYLOID® AQ silica for waterborne coatings and SYLOID® RAD silica for UV-based coatings. In addition, LUDOX® colloidal silica was showcased for its capabilities in organic coatings, inorganic coatings and hybrid resin coatings. These are just a few good examples of Grace supporting the development of green industrial coatings.
Mr. Changle Yin, the technical service expert of Grace, gave a speech on waterborne coating solutions at the CHINACOAT Technology Forum. Grace has always attached great importance to the Chinese market. With the increasing demands from end consumers on the silky feeling of waterborne wood coatings, Grace previewed an upcoming product launch happening later in 2023. SYLOID® AQ800S silica, based on the SYLOID® AQ series of products, will launch specifically for the Chinese market later this year. With water resistance and permeability in addition to excellent silky feeling, this product can be used as a new solution for high-performance waterborne coatings.

As the first wholly foreign-owned enterprise established in China in 1986, Grace has continuously expanded its business and product supply in the Chinese market. Since 1986, Grace has continued to invest in the region to include growing its local sales and technical teams.
James Qiu, Sales Director, Asia Pacific, Grace Materials Technologies stated, “In the recent 2 years, the coatings industry in China has accelerated its transition to more eco-friendly products. China is a very important market for Grace. We will continue to invest in China with innovation, technical support, quality products and supply chain optimization to provide solutions our customers have come to expect from a world class organization.
