Job Description:
BORCHERS OM Group is searching for a Coatings Additives Technical Service Manager to manage the technical services lab at our Westlake, OH facility.
The individual will manage the technical support of the coatings additives business through the management of customer projects, technical documentation, customer engagements and sharing of technical knowledge. Accountable for solution of complex customer problems through recommendations of borcher additive products in the coatings field, building strong links with customers at the senior technical level and identifying opportunities for new products and new applications for existing products.
Direct responsibility for lab personnel. Reports to Marketing Director.
Essential Functions:
• Solve customer problems and requests by the use of OMG products by a combination of approaches – verbal advice, lab based projects, customer visits and the production of data sheets.
• Prioritizes work requests based on potential impact to the business and in consultation with the Commercial team.
• Identify new product opportunities or new applications of existing products through customer contact and market knowledge – and work with the R&D Manager to turn these into new product projects.
• Form strong relationships with senior technical staff at key customers, trade associations and suppliers.
• Preparation of new work requests or new product development requests due to customer or development projects to determine whether the product is feasible. Providing of requests to lab technicians, organization of process, overview, design and communication of reports internally and externally.
• Ensure all lab work is carried out efficiently and in a way most relevant to customer needs through the use of modern formulations and test methods.
• Evaluate and optimize product applications with necessary use testing, generate data for customers and make use recommendations and assisting the Marketing team in the production of promotional material.
• Takes the lead in promoting lab safety and Product Stewardship values.
• Prepare and deliver technical presentations to promote products at customers or trade shows/meetings.
• Maintain a strong awareness of new technologies, competitive threats and opportunities and regulatory developments in the coatings and allied fields.
• Provide management and guidance to the junior members of the team.
• Good project leadership of multiple projects and communication skills in managing and completing projects in a timely fashion including presentation of the completed work to customers
• Provide technical service for current business and engage accounts in new product development discussions for new business opportunities
• Provide input on technical and marketing communications to promote the growth of the coatings additive business.
• Support the development of technical literature, sales tools and training programs for internal and distributor use and for presentations to customers
• Build a relationship with resin manufacturers
Other responsibilities:
• Investigation of customer complaints
• Technical training of sales and distributors
• Maintain close contact and share information with Technical Service teams in Westlake, Langenfeld and Shanghai.
• Ability to travel approximately 30% of the time in the NAFTA region
• 10 years’ experience as Coatings Chemist, Coatings Formulator or Coatings Technical Service in formulation development and testing in the coatings industry either with a coatings producer or a supplier to the coatings industry
• Strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills
• Establish experience in people and project management
• Presentation/public speaking skills
• Computer literacy (Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
• Travel expectations is 30%.
• A B.S degree is required
